"The end of the world" happens for each of us, and we all face it alone.

An inability to deal with that fact leads to its externalization.

Those guys you occasionally see with "the end of the world is nigh" signs suffer from an inability to deal with the fact they're going to die and the world won't even notice.

Lots of the same mentality goes on on the net.

All that said, the world is a hard place, and we've lived through what may be the easiest stretch in all human history. Lots of possibilities for a dramatic shift for the worse in this world, and this nation.

Things are not looking terribly rosy for the future at the moment, and it could very easily escalate beyond just the middle east. If the major powers get drawn into open warfare (and they easily could) it could very well be TEOTWAWKI, but the world will go on, and there'll even be large numbers of humans around to witness it.

There isn't going to be a simple air strike on Iran and everything stays more or less the same like it did with Iraq, it'll be a big deal that dramatically alters the balance of power around the world. Wars begin when  the balance is radically shifted and nations believe they have an advantage.

The Hamas victory makes escalation even more likely.

It is very important IMO whatever is done regarding Iran remains conventional.

Politicians are really impressed with Nukes. It's their big hammer.

I'm guessing that in a few decades, the United States won't need nukes. We'll have much better, but less destructive weapons.

I think the draft is coming, and pretty soon. There were rumors of it a year or two ago, but if a war with Iran begins, and that looks increasingly possible, I don't see any way around it. What do you all think? Edit war with Iran looks almost certain.

I think it would be incredibly stupid to fight a ground war in Iran, so we won't need a draft to deal with them.

We may well need a draft to deal with what comes after. I also think there will be major changes in the nature of civilian life here at home, the economy will be completely different afterwards unless we get everything just right.

I agree fighting a ground war in Iran would be foolish, we hit them with air power, and remove their nuke threat, and ability to carry a war outside their boarders, but one more conflict to manage, will call for additional troops to be available. We need more man power in the armed forces as it is, and if for some reason all this brought North Korea in, we would have to have ground forces, to defend that front. I would hate for world tensions to get to the point of reinstating the draft, but it doesn't seem to far away, better to have them, and not need them, than need them and not have them. IMO
