Because of the endgame speed, I suspect they use a laser fuse. Could be RF...but can't say from the data provided. Google Excalibur. Maybe we can find out. |

155 mm, guided projectile. The VT fuze is RF however, optimal height of burst is at 7 meters. I believe the round also has a NSB (Near Surface Burst) mode, which would explain the slightly lower than desired HOB. Angle of fall also effects burst height, because of the side lob like pattern of the radar, high angle shots have a much lower HOB than a low angle shot. Technically it is fragmentation, since Shrapnel is a specific munition type not really in use anymore because it was found less than effective in WWI. |

The use of PGMs for artillery, eliminates some of the need for massed fires. Automated technical gunnery, GPS and chronographs have eliminated most of the need for large formation massed fires, today we can get the effect with a battery than the in WWII would have required a battalion of more of guns to achieve. With the increased accuracy of being able to place the round next to any precision located grid, the need for putting allot of rounds out to make up for inherent inaccuracy kind of goes away.
Massed fires may become only necessary for suppression, but I would think that M795 vice this round would be used for that since cost is much less. Ft Sill is also testing the LCCM (Low Cost Component Munition) trajectory correcting fuze. This will give a similar capacity to dumb munitions. |
