I don't actually know what a DOS attack is, but can the attackers be reported to the FBI? I'm assuming this crosses state lines.

DOS. Denial Of Service, generally happens when a lot of zombie machines are ordered to all flood a website with HTTP requests or pings or some other internet traffic. Essentially, the idea is to use lots (dozens to thousands) of machines to deny service to a site or sites. Good luck catching anyone. The machines you'd track down are the machines that have been hijacked, they belong to some unsuspecting person who is not responsible for the attack. Jim |

So here's a question. Can a site such as ours deny access to all but those who have a trusted IP address as a common defensive practice?
Certainly that's not the solution in this case, but I'd just like to know if it's doable. Obviously dial-up users would be screwed. But how about Team Members and the like with a static IP? |

Almost no home users have a true static IP. There has been a few times where GB turned off guest access though. It seemed to work well enough. |

Every time this happens we are not given an ISP who is responsible so we can deploy countermeasures.
Why? I'd love to bring the assholes crawling on their knees, unless its the USDOJ BATFE and then they can do what they want because they don't have to follow the law anyway and have an unlimited budget to harrass citizens. And shoot dogs. Especially with the silenced 10mm Mp5 with night vision. Those. |

Because that would be breaking the law. Just find the offending IP or subnets, and null route them. |
