I'm planning on building a 20 cal rifle in either 204 or 20 tac. I was wondering if a 39 or 40 grain 20 cal bullet can produce "red mist" explosions on prarie dogs out to 400 yards like the 55 grain 22-250 can do.

I'm not planning on building a 17 Remington cal rifle, but figure more of you guys probably have experience with the 17 caliber since it's been around a lot longer then the 20. So if you tell me a 25 grain 17 Cal bullet can blow up a PD at 300 yards, then I'll assume a 39 grain 20 cal will produce the same results at 300-400 yards.

Apprecuate hearing from you what kind of performance these two calibers deliver on PD and at what yardage you made the kill......before I have my rifle built.

Them wizzbang calibers will turn a PD inside out no doubt but they are literally overkill.

I am satisfied with simple when it comes to splatterin' pasture poodles.  .223 in Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tips, Hornady 55gr V-Max & Hornady SPSX in 55gr makes them critters pretty dead.  Acrobatics when they get whacked with heavier thin skin bullets is much more entertaining IMHO.

My brothers and myself have done a lot of varmint shooting. Lot of fun and also to control prairie dog numbers. We have actually had landowners furnish the ammo for the shooting on their land. .223 or 5.56 is one of the best calibers you can use from our experience. My brother bought a 22-250. Great gun,Winchester Model 70, but like he says you get a little velocity for more powder used. You can burn up a lot of ammo if the shooting is good and this is where the .223 is better for prairie dog hunting if you are trying to save money reloading. It is economical and effective. Use a good hollow-point bullet and there are some impressive hits.

CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar with a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x 40mm AO scope.

Very accurate (more than I am) and a pure joy to shoot all day long.

I see dead pdogs in my future.  

Any 17's or 20's to report about....anybody?
