. . . would not buy Viagra.  Or Cialis or whatever.  I am so sick of the fucking spam.

Don't they realize that you don't have to advertise 'hard-on' drugs???  If someone's penis isn't getting hard, that person will either seek out medical attention or seek out a site on the internet to buy Viagra.

It's the same fucking reason you don't need to advertise cocaine, heroin or pussy.

uh, chief, the 'spam' isn't done by the drug makers or legitimate vendors.

Kind of like saying "if I ever need a stereo, I won't buy one because the crack addict down street is always trying to sell me one".

The SPAM I see on TV sure is.
Trying to brainwash the public into buying crap they don't need because the patents have expired on the generics and they can't charge outrageius prices. So they create a new drugs that does the same thing but are still patented, and market the hell out of it. How do you think the the big drug makers became richer than the energy companies?

"Ask your doctor" my ass. Those frequents drug ads you see on TV are Spam in my book.

Umm, isn't that kindof the point of expiring patents?  To make the drug companies continually develop new drugs?  I see those ads all the time.  Yes they are annoying, but so are all ads.  Just like the Jedi mindtrick, it only works on the weak-minded.

Yes, but as in the case of Celebrex, when you develop new drugs for revenue and not for the health of the people buying them, big drug corps are helping only themselves.

Except when the right people find out about the falsified tests, obfuscated results and testimonials as is happening now.
But they will pay their way out of that, the FDA and many physicians will continue to be in bed with big drugs and the cycle will continue. never mind that some drugs kill more people than than they help until they get yanked.

Canada is the perfect example. The big Drug corps sell the same drugs to Canada at 3/4 the cost because the Canadian gov't puts a ceiling on the prices. Yes the drug corps still make a tidy profit or they would not sell to Canada. But will our lame gov't do the same for us? Hell no, they let the big drug corps continue to rape the American public because legislators have had their palms grease by the big drug corps.  That's why I hate the drugs ads so much.

They are a bunch of treasonous bastards in my book, all of them.

It does not take a genius to see that a massive portion of those profits are not going into R&D, but rather executives bloated pockets and paying off politicians.  They are likely the most powerful consortium in history, far eclipsing the oil industry.  They are an incredibly dangerous conflict of interest at work.

I have worked in the medical industry since 1991. I have no illusions about this, none whatsoever.

But you seem convinced they are the knight in shining armor, so go with that if you want.
We will agree to disagree.

And if we didn't have people *GASP* making a profit (I know that may sound evil to you), there would be no incentive to develop the medications that are saving and improving lives.

Sorry, you're picking and chosing lefty talking points and ignoring the reality.

Canada is having problems because their "cheap drugs" are being bought out by americans. R&D can not be sustained on capped prices. You have to pick one or the other.

And YOU are subsidizing the cheap canadian drugs. They have to make it up somewhere. It's not a noble experiment. It's a mess that causes higher prices here.

And you're half right about the problem being with the government - but it's a problem with the overly complex and idiotic approval process for drugs. And the failure of congress to enact tort reform.

You want cheaper drugs?
1. Simplify the approval process (and speed it up)
2. Tort reform so ambulance chasers can't make BILLIONS off of statistically insignificant data variations.
3. All drugs everywhere are at market prices- not capped.
4. Get rid of 3rd party payment for drugs (and medical care as well) - that is one of the most significant factors in the cost of medical care. It's like having government / employer provided cars- people are always going to spend more than they otherwise would when someone else is paying the bill.

But bitching about how evil corporations are acting all "corporationy" and making profits will only leave you with less innovation and more people dying. Cause and effect doesn't not cease to function just because people "really need medical care".
