My best friends wife and she is also a college friend of mine, got canned by FORD this week.   11 years and she got 8 months of severance and escort out of the building.

So who else has lost a job?

I developed heart trouble and my cardiologist won't sign off on my returning to my current occupation.
Been off work for a month and wife had to get a job to try and cover bills.
It's been so long since I've done anything but drive truck I have no idea what to do.

Had an intership last spring that didn't go fulltime as promised.  Politics with the dumbfuck COO.  Landed a job with a company much larger with twice the pay a week later.  Fuck em.

I was given notice back in November that my position would no longer be needed due to a buyout. I however found another job paying similar pay, but with less benefits.

I feel for them.

Terrible to lose a job, but 8 months of severance isn't too shabby.  Assuming she has some savings too, she should be in pretty good shape for a job search.

She should increase her allowances on her W-4 a LOT before that last BIG check comes in, if she can.  I'm no tax professional, but I remember how my employer withheld taxes from my last check, which included a month's pay plus 20 days vacation buy-out,  as if I were making that much every two weeks.    Sure, I got a refund, but I hated seeing that much withheld on my last check.  Now I no better.

I worked at AMD in Austin for over 10 years and was outsourced Feb 2004 along with all my friends and coworkers. I got a job in Houston June 2004, paid my own relocation and just bought a house May 2005. This week we get notice that our office is shutting down and we will be outsourced by the end on May 2006 with one month severance pay.  I think I have a job lined up back in Austin working some some former coworkers. Got my fingers crossed.

Well I just played hockey with my buddy and they found her a new job.  Same pay and benefits but now she has to do HR with the UAW.  Its basically a crap job not like the one she had before.  She has to discipline a bunch of union guys, so you know what that is going to be like for a woman.  She is thinking of turning it down but she is going to work it until a better one comes along.

In her situation I would be pissed but at least you have a source of income guaranteed.

If you got shit canned by your employer its because you weren't paying off for them... for whatever reason.  It may or may not have anything to do with your skills.  Often times it's just the luck of the draw.

That's capitalism.  No one has figured out a better economic system yet, so I guess we'll have to deal with it.

I got shit canned Dec. 31, 2003.  Took me 18 months to find another job.  That sucked, but I'm doing better now.

If you've been shit canned then my advice is to hone your skills, be patient, be persistent, don't give up or give in, and keep up your confidence in yourself.  It'll come together for you eventually.

Unless you're a fuck up...

In which case you deserve to get shit canned.

Lost my job of 10+ years February of 2004. I got 2 weeks of vacation pay.

I have been playing the work/layoff game for over a year at UPS. I have been off for 3 weeks now. They say next time I get called should be for full time, I'm not holding my breath.

S.I.L. just received notice Thursday at GM Metal Castings plant in Saginaw MI. She is QC/mgt & highly educated with at least a masters & probably her PHD by now.   She was offered a job in Pontiac as a supv over skilled tradesmen.  That plant is 40 some miles farther from their home & she is looking for an opening at the Bay City Metal Fab plant.

I've seen this in Michigan 27yrs ago. It was very bad then, it is going to get really ugly this time around

GM, Ford, & Delphi's troubles are only compounded by our .governess Granholm (D-Canada) who is completely unwilling to cut taxes OR cut welfare for the lifelong parasites.

I got laid-off from BMC in Austin in August 2003.  Moved to Houston 3 months later.  I have been promoted 3 times and make 40% more than I made in Austin.  Sometimes being canned is the best thing for your career.

Lay-offs are standard today, I hope the next time around works out as well for me.

I got laid off in 2005 oct I think.  Pretty good job, but alot of stress and not much pay.  I was unemployed for less than 2 months but I now have a job getting paid twice what I was making before.   Best part is my current employer called me.
