I want to put a row of border tile around and over my shower enclosure. It is textured and painted greenboard. Could I use a tube adhesive and stick it right to the painted sheetrock?

They sell tile backer board for that. I'd recommend it.

There are two kinds - concrete with a mesh over it, and hardboard you can cut with a jig saw.

I would STRONGLY recommend the hard board, NOT the concrete boards. Especially if you got outlets / switches to cut around

Yes, use a type of mastic and a 1/8 in notched trowell to apply it to the wall.

Yup, as long as the tile is not directly exposed to water. Just buy premixed mastic, trowel it on and stick your your tile to it. Grout after the specifed time on the mastic container.

While you could do it, I would strongly suggest a backing board though.

+1...Installing tile sucks. You only want to do it ONCE.
