Why in the hell do young kids even need access to the internet to begin with?

OK, so some might say "They need the internet to do their home work". BS, all the answers to their questions can be found in their school books. Using the internet to do their homework is like only using a calculator and never really learning to do math. Reading school books is apparently a thing of the past, old school if you will.

There are so many dangers involving kids using the internet that making porn access the issue seems silly. How many fucking child molesters have posed as kids on chat rooms to lure kids to meet them somewhere? I'd say that in its self is much worse than porn.

I realize that the internet was not around when I was a kid, but I did have an Atari 2600 (state of the art shit back then, if you can believe that) and I still practially lived out side, riding my bike, playing baseball or whatever.

Kids need to get away from computers, video games and play outside like normal kids should, and keep porn where it belongs, on the internet.

I'm going to take some heat for this I'm sure, but explain to me why kids need to live in front of computers or video games instead of doing activities outside.

You have to be careful when you have kids. The kids computer has web filtering and they can only go to certain web sites. But often times now the kids are given homework assignments which require the use of the internet. Which seems unfair to me because everyone might not have internet access.

I think we need a "national internet access act" or NIAA, all ethernet cards and laptops with internet access capability are subject to a background check and $200 one time tax.  all transfers must go through licensed dealers and posession of an unregistered internet capable computer will result in a 10 year sentence or $100,000 fine.

its for the children

my daughters, until they leave the house will never have access beyond the filters I'd install for sites that want to visit.

my brother-in-law's son (10) was caught with his friend over at his friend's house looking at porn.  The dad was livid as well as my brother-in-law.  He has a filter/program installed, that he can not access any site except what's allowed by him.  I think that's a pretty simple solution.  I wont' let my daughters access any chat room....ever, or a forum, until they're adults.

Well I know my nephew NEED to use the interent. His homeoworks involves research that is not in the text books given at school. The teacher pretty much them to expand on what is written in the text books.

He is in the 6th grade and doing college level type research. They also encourage them to use MS office such as word and excel for their homeworks. And uses a PC at school. Man you gotta love pvt schools.

But having filters and monitoring is a must for kids. Luckily my brother is pretty good at doing that.

Holy shit!!

People parenting their children!  Say it isn't so! What a colossal waste of time!!

We have laws to raise your children! What the hell are you doing? Get with the program! We need more absentee parents to fuel the economic growth of WalMart.

It's a part of life now.  You need to have some understanding of it, and most schools will require some use of it in assignments.  Beyond that they really don't.  Hell will freeze over before I am naive enough to give my kid open access to the net from a location that I can't supervise.

As for the library.  I used to spend lots of time in them, and I never did see these throngs of teens beating off to porn that people claim to fear so deeply.

No heat from me, I agree 100% with you.
Parents want a "babysitter", i.e. TV, video games, computers...
I also had the high-tech Atari. For homework I used an Encyclopedia... I really wonder how many homes have a set of those anymore? Very very few I bet.

These days, Encyclopedias come on CDs ...
The odd thing, you don't need to have internet access to use them. So, kids + homework = software, not internet. I see no reason for kids having access. Computers sure, modems no.

Of course, kids will just go to Johnny's unsupervised house, where Johnny's parents spend their time in bars etc... instead of raising kids. There they'll get porn DVDs, internet access, junk food and soda, could get access to pharmeceutical drugs and liquor cabinets,  and maybe even play "doctor".  hock.gif

I don't see porn as a big deal in the first place. Network television is every bit as bad.

At very young ages, internet access should be very limited, and under direct supervision only.

Once a child is old enough to use the net with only a parent in the room, then they are old enough to be exposed to "regular" porn in my opinion.  Not that I plan to take my 10 year old and send them to a porn site, but you WILL eventually click on a porn link, especially if you're just learning to use search engines.

When it happens, simply explain to them what porn is, why it is worng, and why it is there.  They are not allowed to visit these site until they are at least 16 or 17.  At this point would be when I would tell them about router logs as well.  They are allowed to go anywhere they want to go, but I will be reviewing the records, so be on your best behavior :)

At 16 or 17, the child, especially a boy, will be to the point where they are not only "interested" in sex, but actively pursuing it in day-to-day life.  Even if they abstain until marriage, they will still "play the game" so to speak.  I don't know of anyone in today's society that didn't at least pursue the opposite sex.  Sex relations - how men and women interact - is part of learning to be a well-adjusted adult.  By this point, they will be "ready" to at least see what goes on.  I will still be reviewing logs weekly at the very least, although there will be no confrontation unless there is material that needs parental explanation.  I.E. - if I see they've visited a bukkake(rape porn) site, its time to sit down and have a talk. Not a "you did wrong" talk, but a "this is bad, and this is why" talk.  If it continues, then its the "you did wrong" talk.

The internet is pretty much a necessity for my children's generation.  I plan to teach my children internet programming at an early age.  They will have to know computers pretty well to make it real world, and I know them well enough to give them an advantage in that respect.

Sheltering a child is a good thing when they're very young, but they're going to HAVE to eventually see this stuff.  I think its best to let them grow on their own, with parental supervision when needed.  My parents treated sex in this way - it was an awkward topic, but it was hardly verboten.  If I wanted to know something sexually related, I was more likely to ask my mom than someone at school.  As a result, a lot of the mystic aspect of sex was gone for me - I knew what was going on.  My parents didn't have the technical knowledge with logs and such that I do, but they also didn't have to worry about the net until I was 10 or so.  And back then, it was harder to "stumble" on a porn site.  I was 10 in 1994.

I'm only 21, and I realize that all this is subject to revision as I get older, wiser, have children, and they get older.  This is kinda my preliminary "plan" on how to treat the whole computers-porn-internet thing.

I would like to add that filters provide only a temporary barrier at best, especially with the way I plan to raise my children.  I intend to spend actual time with them, teaching them fun stuff like computers, math, and literature.  By the time I would need to install a filter, I would hope they would have no trouble circumventing it.  Knowing there is a lof that is reviewing is a much better deterent, and its MUCH harder to edit a log without making noise.  Especially if that log is on a Cisco router sitting in a locked cloed with decent security :)

that is the idea. Kids need to get out in the world. Sitting on the PC all day is just going to make you lazy. I have no problem with kids learning how to use the computer and doing research on it, but they need to get off their lazy asses. Obesity is an "epidemic" in America and it's mostly because the kids are lazy little fucks that think they don't have to do shit.

No, they can't. Kids are often assigned projects that require internet research these days. Getting kids to incorporate technology with learning is a key goal of many districts, to the point that some issue a laptop to each child every year.

Ummmm....Ya.

Reasearch is largely going to be an internet phenomenon from now on.

Trust me.

Yes that is more dangerous than porn in the same sense that shooting someone in the head is more dangerous than hitting them in the knee with a baseball bat.

Neither is very good.

Nobody is arguing that kids should spend their whole lives in front of computers. Nevertheless, internet access is a part of life these days and kids are going to need access to the web. We just need to make sure to keep as many of the scummy aspects of the web away from them as possible.

There are good default deny filters out there that allow you to specify only certain sites that they can go to. Further, good routers nowdays are capable of blocking entire domains which you can do fairly easily.

My kids school district requires the use of computers and Internet access to properly complete all assignments.  Kids are also expected to access the school servers from home via the use of the Citrix ICA ActiveX control.

If they don't have Internet access or their own computers and color printers, they can make use of the school computers during free periods or after school.

One example: My grandson taught himself to read at age 4 by using the Internet. All my children and grandchildren have  used the internet since they were old enough to operate the keyboard and mouse -- usually beginning about age three.  They are all more advanced than their peers in school in just about every subject. When they get beyond the first few grades, use of the internet is often required for classes. It is a big benefit to studying, and has a lot of interesting material, even when it isn't required for school assignments.

If you think that all the answers can be found in school books, then you are simply clueless. What else is there to say? I am on the net all the time with the kids showing them something new.

But I understand that some people get terrified about their kids being exposed to things. That's one reason that my kids had an easier time finding jobs than a lot of their peers.

Get content filtering software or services like this:

BSafe  Costs me 13.6 cents a day.

And you don't really have to worry about internet dangers.  With a little work/know-how, one can block most all of the area's of concern (porn, chat rooms, etc)

And without the use/knowledge of computers and the internet, kids face a huge disadvantage nowadays, period.

Freedom...

- The condition of being free of restraints.
- Liberty of the person from slavery, detention, or oppression.

- Political independence.
- Exemption from the arbitrary exercise of authority in the performance of a specific action; civil liberty: freedom of assembly.
- Exemption from an unpleasant or onerous condition: freedom from want.
- The capacity to exercise choice; free will: We have the freedom to do as we please all afternoon.
- Ease or facility of movement: loose sports clothing, giving the wearer freedom.
- Frankness or boldness; lack of modesty or reserve: the new freedom in movies and novels.

- The right to unrestricted use; full access: was given the freedom of their research facilities.
- The right of enjoying all of the privileges of membership or citizenship: the freedom of the city.
- A right or the power to engage in certain actions without control or interference: “the seductive freedoms and excesses of the picaresque form” (John W. Aldridge).

I know what you are talking about. You think you can control others, because you don't "think" they need the internet. Just because you didn't have it when you were a kid, it means kids now don't need it either. That's one reason our kids are dumbed down compared to the rest of the world. Or don't you know that American kids are losing ground to kids of other countries?

I know how to read, but you think you have the Right to tell people what to do. You are WRONG. My daughter gets straight A's and my son get's mostly A's and some B's. My kids are well adjusted, are respectful, don't get into trouble, know how to shoot/protect themselves and know what Freedom means. So don't tell me I don't know how to parent.

You are just pissed because I am right and you don't know what the meaning of Freedom is.

How about prosecuting the people that are MAKING the kiddie porn? Instead of worrying about my kids access to the internet? Both of my kids have internet access and I know they don't go around surfing porn sites, because I know what they are looking at. Yes, I look at their computer history. Good parents do that. Seems to me, like we have ALL KINDS of laws about child endangerment and kiddie porn, then why won't the government use all it's resources to enforce those laws? Because they want to start having access to what YOU are looking at. Just like when Nixon had war protestors followed and investigated. That's why.

Excuse the government all you want, call parents horrible all you want, but you are not looking at the FACTS, just your old time memories and emotion.

Aldridge).

I guess you missed the class on Freedom didn't you?

You know how to read right?

I didn't say anything about fucking laws or the government did I?

Before you go into some insane rant read the post. It really does help.

I don't think young kids need access to the internet, I never said anything about laws. Maybe you use the internet and computers as parent subsitutes and my feelings towards this gets you defensive...I don't really know or care.

That statement I marked in red is probably the most assinine and childish thing you've said so far, and there have been many. I'm not even going to respond to it or you at all anymore after this.

Read the topic of the post again, see the word question at the end of the post?

At no time did I ever mention taking away anyones right to access the internet. I said I can't see why young kids need access to it. If some home work somehow requires it, which I highly doubt since a lot of kids probably do not even have internet access at their homes, then so be it. But it's not the governments job to keep kids away from internet porn, it's the fucking parents. If little kids age 3 and up must be on the internet according to you and a few other, than you take the fucking responsibility for what they see there then.

You can respond back if you must, but I'm not discussing this with you anymore, you can't even read or comprehend what you read, one of the two. You keep blurting out freedom and shit as if I'm even talking about that.

When I was a kid I had the internet and I had porn. I also had Cinemax, Showtime, and HBO. I turned out fine.

My kids will have unfiltered internet access.

IMO good parenting doesnt mean you keep your kids ignorant about certain things.
