Kirby is a nice vacuum but $$$ (at least from what I've seen). The chicks that go door to door (around here) selling them are super hot. |

I was in a store for work yesterday that sold nothing but vacuum cleaners. It blew my fucking mind that there would be an entire store dedicated to that.

Look at the Dysons unless you want to spend way over a thousand for a Rainbow or Electrolux.

I have a Dyson. It works well and you don't have to buy bags for it.
I have a dog. When I vacuum the carpet the Dyson picks up enough hair for me to knit another dog. (And yes, I do run it regularly. The dog sheds.) |

I'm pretty happy with my Hoover "Self-Propelled Windtunnel Ultra". Price was in the low $300 range.
It uses a micron filter bag (type 'Y') and has an upholstery attachment that does wonders on pet hair and dander. I have three cats, one of which is a longhair. |

Kirby! I love mine. DO NOT buy one new. They show up on ebay all the time for less than half. I've seen G4's for $200 bucks.

Go to the local library and see what Consumer Reports said, you don't have to buy CR's recommended brands etc, but they did an extensive testing of various brands, and their is a lot of adversting hype.

I have a Hoover Windtunnel with two counter-rotating brush rollers. It picks up great, and it's bagless and easy to empty. It also has an attachment that is great for stairs and upholstery. Long hair tends to wrap around the rollers, and you have to cut it off periodically, but otherwise, it's wonderful.

Rip out the carpet and get hardwoods. Brooms have less moving parts.
