Does the front post detent fly off if the sight post is removed, or is it captured by the sight base somehow. I don't want to lose it.

The front sight post detent will earn its jump wings......Airborne!!!!  The sight post itself holds the detent in place.  However, some simple care in removal of the post will prevent loss.  This particular spring is not too strong.

It is under spring pressure. It will fly

Try disassembling it in a large clear plastic bag.

If it flys, it won't get far.

Was no problem. Not under enough tension to fly. just sticks up.
