First Graders Suspended For Bringing Toy Guns To School

January 15 - An Arkansas City family is ready to take on the school district after their first grader is suspended for taking a toy gun to school. Clayton Jenkins got the broken paintball gun from his older brother. The 7-year-old was proud of the toy and took it to school for show and tell.

Clayton's parents Leah and Chris Jenkins say his teacher and principal understood the boy didn't mean any harm and told him wasn't in trouble. That all changed the next day when the Jenkins say one of Clayton's classmates was kicked off the bus for the rest of the year after getting caught with a plastic squirt gun.

The principal reportedly tried to get the boy back on the bus and called the superintendant for help. Instead the superintendant gave the order to suspend both boys for five days.

Under the district's policy a student shall not knowingly posses any weapon or facsimilie of a weapon at school. The Jenkins say the key word is "knowingly" and Clayton didn't know it was wrong.

The Jenkins plan on appealing the decision. They've started a petition to change the policy that punishes a 5-year-old the same as it would an 18-year-old. They're also considering contacting an attorney.

School officials say they can't legally comment on a student's disciplinary issues. Meanwhile, the Jenkins are waiting to hear when their appeal will be heard.

That's been proven as one of the most ignorant myths going.  I don't have kids yet, but I have met homeschooled kids of friends, and they are quite well adjusted, and pretty damn smart for their age.  There are a shitload of homeschoolers in this area so maybe that has something to do with it - they socialize with each other.

For a couple of years, I took a rifle to school (.22 S/L/LR semi) It was allowed and in fact, it was encouraged. The lunch hour was used for target practice.

I was homeschooled 3rd through 5th grade and 8th through 11th grade, skipping my senior year and getting an eight month vacation from school because the college courses I took dual credit in 10th and 11th grade gave me enough credit to skip my senior year of highschool and most of my college freshman requirements. When I wasn't homeschooled, I went to two different private schools. There was no challenge; I didn't learn anything I hadn't learned already at home and I developed the bad habit of just coasting through on ability since it didn't take any effort to blow past the rest of the class. Heck, my grades alone ruined the curve for the rest of the class. Now I'm struggling to overcome the laziness I developed so I can excel in college too. Homeschooling was the only time that education ever challenged me.

And I'm sure I was soooo socially challenged, going to all those 4-H meetings, competing in entomology and public speaking projects, and hanging out with a bunch of other homeschoolers. That robotics club I was in for four years probably kept me from learning how to interact with other people in my age group too. Dang. I shoulda just gone to public school, learned nothing but got passed along to the next grade anyway so my precious self-esteem wouldn't be damaged, and become indoctrinated by the socialist nanny-state moonbats running the classrooms. Then I'd be so much more capable of social interaction as I screwed every slut in the school and got ten STD's and a paternity suit. Yeah.

I plan on homeschooling any children I may eventually have. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, it's math, science, and history. Tuesday and Thursday, we do literature and help daddy field-strip all his guns and go through some of that ammo that's laying around. Who WOULDN'T want an education that well-rounded? Add in boy/girl scouts, 4-H, and other social/educational activities, plus the neighborhood kids, and I think they'll get plenty of social interaction.

I graduated in '97 and I had a kid in my class do a speech on cleaning a shotgun, they let him bring his 12 gauge into the classroom.  

Also there were a lot of us that went hunting before or after school and had rifles or shotguns in their vehicles in the school parking lot.  You can't do that now but I am willing to bet that a lot of kids still do it anyway.

We all brought pocketknives and whittled at lunchtime.

I graduated in the mid 80's and I brought Dad's shotgun to school to use as a prop in a play. He disassembled the trigger mechanism for me, though, just to be on the safe-side. Funny, I never even thought twice about it then.
My kids make guns out of Play doh. I'll be sure the little blue and green non-toxic AR's do NOT make it into school in their ruck sacks!

Guns are no longer allowed at my university (they banned them shortly before I enrolled- coincidence, or spite?), but Texas law says we can still store them in our cars. I kid you not, probably half the campus keeps a rifle, shotgun, or both in the back of their car. My roommate during my freshman year disappeared nearly every weekend. Squirrels, dove, deer, turkey, pigs, audads, if it moved and had a season he went after it every chance he got.

Gee, publicly schooled kids who are ignorant, socially inept, intentionally cruel people are the norm.  Home schooled children tend to mature more slowly, because they don't have to deal with all of the crap from their peers, tend to be more stable adults.

But that is just my personal experience.  YMMV.

All firearms are projectile weapons. Not all projectile weapons are firearms. Is a crossbow a firearm? No. Is a BB gun a firearm? No. Is a rocket launcher a firearm? No. Is a catapult a firearm? No. Is a paintball gun a firearm? No. Is a slingshot a firearm? No.

Meandering back to the subject of the post, I recently heard of some 1st graders suspended for making a "gun" with their thumb and index finger and "shooting" each other. The feminization continues.

We used to make toy guns and real knives in shop class.

If school administrators want the kids to respect them later in high school (when kids can do real damage) and in adulthood, they need to stop the zero tolerance BS.

You aren't supposed to bring toy guns to school (for that matter you shouldn't be taking toys of any kind to school, you go there to learn, not play). This is nothing new, they had that rule on the books when I was in grade school.

You can't suspend one kid for having a toy gun on the bus (which is still technically "at school") and not suspend the other kid who had one, you have to have a blanket policy and enforce it across the board.

It is how it is, the kids shouldn't have had the toys at school, their parents should have known better, period.

I remember one day we brought cap guns to school in the 2nd grade. We were dressed up as cowboys and indians and we had a drawing contests where we would get up in front of the class to see who could draw the fastest. This was at a private Christian School of course.

Why couldn't the PARENTS have given the situation a thought before sending junior to school with the CO2 mechanism for discharging projectiles in linear path with a specific acceleration over a given period? In loco parentis means what it says. If you send junior to school with a device listed in the school's policy as a suspendable offense and junior then gets suspended who's to blame; the bus driver for picking the kid up, the teacher for reporting the device, the principal for acting on the incident, the superintendent for following the written policy, the board of education for instituting the policy or the GD "parents" who let him out the door in the first place?  Sometimes people need a swift kick in the a** where their brain resides to jumpstart the cognitive process.  Blame the school. Go ahead, its easy to blame society's great social experiment, the public school, for all the ills of the world (liberalism, conservatism, communism, socialism, whatever "ism" you care to add) while the rest of the world boils over due to their lack of an educated populace.  OBTW homeschooling is allowed by law in my state and that means that any parent who wishes to homeschool their child can do so without interference from the public sector.
