White Studies Class

More indoctrination for those idiotic enough to actually attend such a Marxist class. The ability of some people to accept such self-loathing astounds me. They should tar and feather the teachers and ride them out of town on rails.

People stare when University of Colorado student Maren Gauldin wears her "Black is Beautiful" T-shirt.

That's because she's white.

The shirt, Gauldin says, is like a tag that forces her to engage in conversations about race, forces her to feel a tiny bit like black and Latino students on an overwhelmingly white campus.

"Every time I put it on, I feel uncomfortable," Gauldin told students at a white-privilege symposium last month that filled an auditorium and spilled into a hallway. "It helps me think about the kind of activist I want to be."

The symposium was part of an introspective look by white Colorado University scholars and students at the privileges they say are automatically afforded to white people.

Awareness of the relatively new field, called whiteness studies, is building as universities examine their diversity and racial strife.

The field of study - by some accounts born 10 years ago at a conference at the University of California, Berkeley and now taught at hundreds of universities - has its critics, who call it white-bashing rhetoric that shows how far academia has strayed from mainstream society.

"Whiteness studies is not about white-bashing, and it's not about white supremacy," said Duncan Rinehart, who will teach the fourth whiteness-studies course at Colorado this semester.

"As long as whiteness is invisible, it's contributing to inequality and injustice. There is a fair amount of just flat-out denial, not malicious, but denial nonetheless."

Feminist scholar Peggy McIntosh, whose essay on white privilege is often required reading for students in whiteness studies, defines it as an "invisible weightless knapsack."

"I have come to see white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was 'meant' to remain oblivious," she says.

The growing discussion of white privilege at the Colorado school has attracted some negative response, and the attacks have spilled into the university's examination of its lack of diversity.

The European/American Issues Forum - an organization that says it is not white supremacist but stands up for white rights - has e-mailed a couple dozen student leaders and filed three open-records requests with CU interim President Hank Brown asking for university expenses on ethnic clubs. One e-mail included statistics of crimes against whites by blacks.

The group's president, Louis Calabro, also has demanded a representative of European-American rights on CU's 44-member, blue-ribbon diversity panel.

Calabro, a 73-year-old retired San Francisco police lieutenant, found out about the white-privilege symposium on the Internet and was incensed. He said CU has created a culture of white guilt by teaching that "everybody else are the victims, and we're the perps."

"The University of Colorado has a campus that's hostile to European-American white people," he said.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, which tracks hate groups, has had Calabro on its radar for years, said deputy director Heidi Beirich. But the European/American Issues Forum has not crossed the line from representing the rights of whites to hating other races, Beirich said.

Student-government leaders say they are trying to ignore Calabro.

"We were getting a lot of types of these crazy e-mails," said Stephen Fenberg, chief of staff for the student union. "They were on Web sites discussing the issue, saying [white privilege] is this liberal idea that doesn't really exist."

Fenberg said he can define whiteness studies - proof, he says, that the campus is awakening to the concept.

Some complaints center on a fear that the University of Colorado will push toward stronger affirmative-action policies to recruit more black and Latino students, who represent 1.5 percent and 5.8 percent of the student body, respectively.

Hundreds of universities across the country offer whiteness-studies courses, estimates Jeff Hitchcock, executive director of the Center for Study of White American Culture, which alerts visitors to its Web site that it's not a white-supremacist group.

The New Jersey-based center tries to debunk the only two views in the United States concerning whiteness - either as white supremacist or color blindness, a belief that whites have no race and therefore don't need to worry about it, Hitchcock said.

Outside of academia, not many have heard of whiteness studies, said Matthew Spalding, director of the Center for American Studies at the Heritage Foundation. He called it an abstract, "invalid category of education" based on the "assumption that you should teach according to racial categories."

FUCK FUCK FUCK....

I moved from the PROC to get away from fuck balls like this....

If they start coming out of the woodwork here and fuck up this state...I'm gonna be one pissed off SOB.

Christ almighty, no matter what color religion or whatever you are, study and work hard, excell in whatever profession you want to go into, don't talk like a thug or gangter (i.e. don't use words in conversation such as in my first three sentences in professional settings), be honest with your employer and clients, and follow the rules and laws....AND YOU WILL SUCCEED.

What is so hard about that?

Political Correctness is all about everyone that opposses it feeling bad about themselves, their religion, their history, their opinions etc....

This is "education" Siberian camp style.

Anyone who subjects him or herself to this is morally and mentally weak.
--------

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, which tracks hate groups, has had Calabro on its radar for years, said deputy director Heidi Beirich.

And the SPLC borders on being a hategroup itself (of course they don't see it that way...that would require introspection, not blame, God forbid). Any group that continually demonizes anyone because of their skin color ( i..e...white people) is a hategroup based on their own definition.

Intelligent black and white people (or whomever) reject this kind of stupidity.
------------

Hundreds of universities across the country offer whiteness-studies courses, estimates Jeff Hitchcock, executive director of the Center for Study of White American Culture, which alerts visitors to its Web site that it's not a white-supremacist group.

And this is the kind of craziness that you get into because of "black studies programs". If you have black studies programs then you should have white studies also. It is only fair. But... Why do we need to have either? What ever happened to the idea of all being Americans? I'll tell you what happened to it. Again, Political Correctness. Political Correctness seeks to pit groups against each other with the overall aim of destroying the target culture.

Well, not quite....it's because she is an idiot.

OK, because I'm white, I'm guilty of racism.

In that case, I'm going to be the very best racist I can be!

Do minorities honestly believe that all white people are "privileged" and get breaks with everything in life? Or is it just activists who make that claim because these days they have less and less tangible evidence to blame people's failures on?

Yah, where has my white privilege been all my life? It didn't help me graduate from high school, didn't help me get into and graduate from college, didn't help me get any jobs. WTF? I've had to work for everything in my life, just like everyone else. Go ask poor white people how that "white privilege" is working out for them? The only privilege in life is money. If you're born into wealth then you have privilege. Otherwise you have to work your ass off for what you have.

CU student weighing in here...

I'm white.

There is, without question, a pervasive air of "white guilt" on this campus.  My english literature class was a prime example last semester.  The professor (white female) harangued the class about how minorities have been put down and shunned from this campus, referring to a handful of racist e-mails send to some minority students in the school.  There are hundreds, if not thousands, of  activists like her in this town.  The idea is, if you have something good it must have come at the expense of a minority.

These racist (and sometimes threatening) e-mails came in a salvo near the beginning of the year. Oh, and someone painted a swastika on a park bench.  The past few months on campus have been marked by multiple student demonstrations demanding everything from a required "diversity class" to a committee that investigates and seeks prosecution for "hate speech".  The latter is now a reality.

My opinion is that this entire Charlie Foxtrot is blown far out of proportion.  I have black friends and THEY think it's overblown.  Granted, if someone calls you a "monkey nigger" and threatens you in an e-mail, you shouldn't just let it go, but you shouldn't cry out that the entire campus is racist and call for more "education" of white students.  If someone says something about you that you think is wayyy out of line, you break his jaw.  Simple.  Don't drag the rest of us into it.

And there's a very obvious reason that CU has a low minority population.  COLORADO IS MAJORITY WHITE!  People reference the <2% black population like it's obviously a sign of a racist admissions office.  Give me a break.

And what about this white privilege bs?  When I was applying to schools, I got higher grades, had better extracurriculars, and better interviews that some of my minority friends, and yet they got into "better" schools AND got scholarships!  White privilege is the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard.  Someone earlier put it best - the only privilege is money.  If only I had more of it.

If you have any sort of common sense and decency, you know what is right and wrong.  You don't need some professor with a Ph.D in underwater basket weaving to tell you how to interact with people.

They say Boulder is twenty-five square miles surrounded by reality, and they're right.

Great, you guys have angried up my blood.  I'm gonna go shooting.

If the university has fewer than 2% black students, the fact that Colorado as a state has almost 4% blacks might be what is bothering people.

However, none of that is really relevant unless one knows the percentages that APPLIED to the university, and whether or not the acceptance rate for blacks was the same as acceptance rates for white (controlling for scholastic skill, of course).

My guess is that few black kids apply to Colorado, and if anything, the acceptance rates are probably higher for blacks than for white.

Not all minorities, just most.  Our own government is at fault and has perpetuated this sense of entitlement within minorities, mostly black, and has convinced probably 30-40% of our population that the key to life is to sit on your ass, hold out your hand, and blame your shortcomings on everyone but yourself----especially white collar white men.  For the government, it is too late, they can't go back now----or they don't have the stomach to.  As I have said before, I work for one of the largest companies in the medical field, and just last summer a group of "African-American" employees raised a big enough stink about not being represented fairly, they forced our company to support and pay for a black employees national sales meeting!  WTF?  This is one of the many fronts where our country is allowing itself to erode.  Oh well, I guess I'm just a racist.

Ya know, I never even had a CONCEPT of race until I was about fourteen or fifteen. Until then I thought skin color, etc. was just something like having different colored hair or eyes. It was only because everyone else made such a big deal about it that I even began thinking in terms of "race" instead of just different people. This saddens me.

It also pisses me off when people call me an anglo because I'm (mostly) white. I don't have a drop of anglo in me, unless maybe you go back to about a two thousand years ago. But thanks for stereotyping me, assholes.
