Quoted: I agree with christ0ph. It's near impossible to hit anything shooting without aiming.
What I really like is that the game has realistic sights that (most of the time) don't block field of view. Most previous games that have realistic sights, let alone any aiming system, completely block out your field of view, which is completely unrealistic. (Most soldiers have two eyes.)
What's unfortunate is that the game is either too easy, or too hard. Every difficulty except the highest is too easy. And the highest is too hard; you spend most of your time doing as Hemingway points out, dieing like a dog for no good reason. And its not so much that its hard, but more than you die randomly a whole lot.
The major missing functionality that causes this problem is squad control. The is forced to be unrealistically easy because basically you have to do everything yourself. Sure, a mysterious voice somewhere says, "We'll cover you," but they really won't. You're about the only person who can reliably shoot at anything, much less advance. Most of the time, taking a building consists of your buddies screwing around while you enter the building unsupported.
The game is breath-takingly realistic in terms of graphics and animation. I'd recommend it to anyone on this basis alone. Unfortunately, you can't seem to shoot through anything--even the an MG42 doesn't seem able to pierce hay bales. Also, you can kill people quite easily by shooting them in the foot. However, they have a tendancy to require several shots to kill as they attempt to crawl away, no matter where you shoot them.
The initial Russian missions are the best, in my opinion. Some in the mid-game missions are rather silly and contrived, in my opinion. A lot of the concepts and vehicles are cool, but not very well-developed. Since no guns have any penetration ability, and most engagements happen at fairly close range, theres little point in using any of the heavier weapons such as the BAR over a SMG.
And what is the world is up with whoever keeps yelling, "I've got a bloody wanker!" I don't want to hear that crap.

MG42? BAR? Are you sure your playing BF2? ;) I agree about it being too easy or too hard on SP, although MP seemes to level out. And yes I agree too about dying A LOT randomly, mostly because of the damn artillery strikes. I think the squad systems best feature is the spawn point that follows the leader, thats all I need to get stuff done when playing with people I know.
