"Gun suppression" . . . the new term of the hour. Whose guns will be suppressed? Those of criminals, or does the NYPD want to suppress YOUR guns?

January 12, 2006 -- The NYPD is taking aim at the city's illegal-gun problem by combining two firearms divisions into one strong unit, officials said yesterday.

In the wake of The Post's gun-menace campaign, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly will realign his arms-tracking departments next month.

Presently, there are two squads for gun control: the Firearms Investigation Unit, which tracks guns, and the people who use and sell them within the city, and the Joint Firearms Task Force, which is made up of cops and federal agents.

These will be combined into one unit called the Gun Suppression Squad, which will add more cops to its team and have a new commander overseeing it.

"Commissioner Kelly undertook a review to improve the efficiency of police operations with the goal of doing an even better job in crime fighting and preventing terrorism in the coming years," said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

Also, the NYPD's Gang Unit is being moved into the Organized Crime Control Bureau — a sign that street-gang thugs are being taken more seriously as they graduate from graffiti and purse-snatching to more serious crimes like racketeering and drug trafficking.

The Milwaukee Co. Sheriff's 16 man Gun Reduction Interdiction Program (GRIP) netted 129 of these nasty things off the streets in 2005.

That's 8 guns per deputy per work year. 8.

Is this program funded for 2006?

You bet it fucking is!

Great. Now those of us in the private sector will need to work harder to keep up with those levels of productivity
