TUCSON - A 29-year-old man fatally shot in the desert near here was among 10 illegal immigrants kidnapped by three gunmen, presumably for ransom, authorities said.

The identity of the man killed Sunday was being withheld until family in Mexico can be told of his death, Tucson police said.

Authorities said the man had crossed the border with a larger group, probably near Arivaca or Sasabe, that was trekking north when the group was waylaid by the gunmen west of Green Valley.

The gunmen chose 10 from the group and walked them into a wash, where the gunmen made camp and gave their prisoners food, authorities said.

But the man who was later shot overheard conversation among the gunmen that made him think he was going to be killed, survivors told detectives.

A struggle ensued, the gunmen fled and the wounded man and the other kidnapped immigrants headed away from the camp and climbed some 1,000 feet up a nearby mountainside. There, the wounded immigrant collapsed and bled to death.

The remaining immigrants hiked through the desert until they were spotted by a hunter, who talked to them and reported the shooting to 911.

The nine surviving victims were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
