I need a new set of tires for my 1998 SUV.

I have a full sized OEM spare. Can I use it safely with
three new tires; or might I have problems due to its age?

It has been riding on the outside of the vehicle  protected by a
wheel cover.

Even though they probably look new, 8 years is pretty old for a tire. The rubber starts to decompose as soon as they pop out from the factory - Ozone, sunlight, heat and cold etc. If it doesn't have cracks, it might still work alright. I wouldn't mount it in the front though.

It should be fine. I used the 12 year old donut spare on my Caravan for the first time this summer and it was fine. I drove on it for about 24 hours and no probs
