i am having a disagreement with someone over this. he says that if you do something that you know is illegal you are being unethical. i responded that based on that logic, abortion is ethical and going 5 mph over the speed limit is unethical. the debate stemmed from someone saying that hunting out of your pickup, in the woods, on your own property was unethical and illegal. IMO he is half right. it is illegal(in TN). but, since it does not afford you an unfair advantage over the game i say it is ethical and i would have no problem doing it. opinions?

99% of the time, something that is illegal is also unethical

just because something is legal doesnt mean it is ethical

given the number of silly and tedious laws we have, i bet you that 99% figure is too high. i agree that most laws were founded, somewhat, by ethics. my point is that just being against the law in no way makes something unethical.

breaking most laws could be construed as unethical, by coincidence. my point is, that just because something is illegal does not automatically make it unethical. dont you agree?

that is why I stated 99% previously, speeding for fun is unethical, speeding to the hospital to get treatment for your buddy who is bleeding to death from a horrible nailgun accident would be ethical.

With the exception of the magna carta being based on the ethics of one man there is no further connection between the two.  An eithical man does not need laws to govern his behavior, whereas an unethical man will give a law no heed.

Any convergence of law and morality is pure happenstance. It was illegal as hell for Nathaniel Greene to fire cannons at his sovereign's troops.
