there are two designs that work well
the traditional fold down the middle design needs slight modification maybe I can find some pics online when I was younger I had a book on folding paper airplanes - it also included designs for paper helicopters as well. |

About 10 years ago I saw something going around that was supposed to fly for quite some time anong the air currents between skyscrapers in NYC. Far away and long ago.....can't remember. Sorry, Pic. |

The Nakamura Lock.
I won a distance and accuracy contest in Jr. High with this airplane. If made and launched correctly, it flies flat, straight, and far. |

With the "fire" modification the paper planes tend to rise before their impending doom.

http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/bettplan.html Fun to drop from heights and watch it just glide down I like to tear two 'flaps' at the end of the plane, about an inch and a quarter long each, by about 3/8 of an inch ideep into the plane. Then fold them up and you can adjust the way it flies. |

Really good design (just made one and played with it). That Nakamura design is better though, IMHO, less room for error, and faster build. Flies well too (I tried bending up the inner portion of the tail (to make a V going UP, center of the fold going about half way to the center point of the plane), to give it a little back elevator, and it flew much straighter as a result. |

My 'standard' is a double-delta, or a canard delta, looks a lot like a Saab Viggen. Got plenty of nose-weight so accepts a lot of thrust without going arse over tip, and the cone is pretty solid, so can take a few knocks.

We used to make different variations of those in school and compete at recess. We would modify the rear of them and add flaps and alereons to make them do rolls and shit. There were some that would do some awesome tricks. There we were, 4th grade and already learning cool stuff about aeronautics.

The airplane my friend Ken Blackburn used to set the endurance records is pretty good.

I had a book growing up too.
It had one design in it that looked unlike all the others, and it flew pretty good. While most look like delta wing jets, this one had a solid front wing, and a fuselage, and then a wider tail. It was like the WWII fighter compared to the swoopy jets. With a few paperclips for weight it flew as good as my others. Can't find anything like it online though. |

This is the Best flying one out there. The Nakamura Lock is the best over all, its easy to make and doesn't require cutting and it flys awesome |

Delta wing configuration. But add a nail or needle to the nose and add tape and superglue. That thing becomes a dangerous dart at close range.

 I'm afraid your 6 year old is a little behind mine. My husband has been demonstrating this procedure since Wyatt's birth. When Wyatt was colicky as a baby it would always get him to stop crying! Wyatt's been playing back up to my oldest and husband's home band for about a year now. |
