signaling, providing concealment. Providing security*

ex: Pop the smoke grenade on the LZ and ask the pilot the color.

ETA, some idiot in my outfit once used a couple to get even with a bartender that 86'd him the night before.

Are you asking what to do with them in a creative manner, or looking to rid yourself of some and are looking for interested parties?

I would think one would be handy in the same bag as a signal mirror, flare gun, etc.

I use them for...

Paintball (cover and concealment when we play at night).

Hurricanes (a smoker will clear out the mosquitos really well)

SHTF (if anyone raids my house I will pop a dozen smokes and I will escape with my dogs)

Cover and concealment is a category. Smoke of course only provides one of them.

For concealment, the red ones work best!

they would be useful for rescue if you were ever stranded and you needed to make a distress signal for aircraft that may be searching for you in the mountains or out on the ocean

Bad guys chasing you...pop a smoke.  Keep running.  100 yards later, pop another smoke.  Keep running.  Tell A-1 Skyraider or A-37 Dragonfly to fire up anybody between the smoke.

Oh, and smoke and CS is ineffective against zombies (or so I'm told...).
