a lot of internet providers have parentel controls, with those in place I would think you giving your 8 year old an email addy would be perfectly OK!

I have an 11 & 13 yr old. They both have their own email. Have not had a problem yet. We do monitor them and keep an eye on their computer time.

As long as the address isn't used to sign up for anything on websites it will get little to no spam mail. My "good" email account that I use for talking with family and some friends gets maybe one spam message every few weeks.

We set our kids up with one when we got our current internet provider years ago, but they've never really used the accounts except for sending an occasional email to an out of state friend. They are 11 and 13 now and just getting to the point where they are interested in IM and email, so that might be changing soon.

mine are 10 and 12 and have had email addys for about 2 years... their dad is active duty military, so it helps them keep in touch with him, but they also email friends and family... we definitely use parental controls (they can only send/receive emails to addresses I've approved) and we haven't had any problems... hth.

they should get an email as soon as they need penis enlargement, mortgage refi info, or a sweet deal from the former Ugandan oil minister.

my 6 & 10 y/o boys both have them, and use them, but they are checked thru outlook with my address, so either I or my wife sees everything that comes in for them.

If you own your own domain name, you can give them an email address and retain full control over it.
Alternately, you can give your kid the email address, with rules like: 1. You must not create any other email account without permission. 2. You must not change your password without telling mom/dad what the new password is. 3. Mom and Dad will periodically log in to your email account. That's just the way it is. 4. Your email account is to be used to talk with friends and school-related activities, but nothing else. 5. (All the other rules about not talking to strangers, whatever else you feel is appropriate to prohibit.) Ultimately, you'll negate all of the rules as your kid gains responsibility, or they'll evaporate at 16/18 anyway. But it's a good start. |

give them a gmail addy or ask one of use who has one for an invite, the gmail will save their emails for ever so they wont accidently get deleted before you can check on them

I've yet to get one piece of spam-mail through gmail. Only problem is you need someone to give you an invite. Send me the e-mail address you use and I can send you an invite if you so desire.
