When they came out I was too young and poor to get one. Now I have money and I can't find them in unmolested condition!!

Any leads???

I sure do miss mine. I had an 84 GTI that was tricked out. That car could handel like it was on rails. I never should have sold it. It was not real fast by todays standards, but it was like driving a big go kart it was so much fun. If you find one keep it and enjoy they are a real blast.

They are getting really hard to find and when you do find one they are trashed in most cases. Many were used in SCCA racing and have seen better days. If you do get one be sure to upgrade the 5th gear to the euro version. It only takes a few hours to do and you do not have to remove the tranny. It makes the car so much better on the highway and you will get over 30mpg+.I think Auto Tech has that part. I saw one in town the other day that had almost 300k on the org drivetrain!!!Good luck with the search I hope you find one they are wonderful cars that will be a collector item in the not to distant future.

Back in '82, I test drove a bunch of cars for building a street racer out of and ended up buying a Ford Escort GT (1st year) . Within the first month, I came to hate that POS and was terribly disappointed I didn't buy the Rabbit GTI.

An 83 would be Canadian, we didn't get em till 84.

My friend has an 83, he followed the guy home and held out 1700 cash as the guy got out of the car, the guy said no, he went back the next day and the guy said " OK just quit coming to my house"

It's about the most perfect GTI I've seen. The only thing he's done to it is put the Ronals on it.

In my dads garage. He has an 84', 1 owner. That bitch is cherry. Hand rubbed with a diaper and all that bullshit. Nothin but the best for it from day one. I drove it a few times, that thing is great. Like a nitrus powered go cart. So much fun. Its been sitting for 5 years. He thinks he's gonna frame off resto it one day, but I think its just gonna sit until he dumps it. He's got a mercedes so its all silly. Course he'd never sell it. I would have bought it myself.

Almost bought an 84 when I was 18 (was huge into car stereos, and this was that car to build up) only problem was insurance was more that payments on the car.. needless to say, I stuck with my pickup.

I bought a 83 Rabbit GTI and a 87.5 Golf GTI 16V new. The Rabbit GTI was one of the best handling cars I ever owned in almost 40 years of driving. It would do amazing things. My GTI 16V was just the opposite. I still don't know how VW managed screw up the GTI so quickly.

You're probably right. I spent more time fighting the car instead of the road. The 83 seemed to be very sorted out, while the 87 16V was just a collection of mismatched parts.

The 87.5 16V also broke the timing belt at 70 MPH. Very expensive with only 40K on it.

My first car was an 84 Rabbit GTI. I learned how to drive with that car. 5 speed with a little 16 valve 4 cylinder engine it was quick. Loved the hand crank sunroof, . Ahh, good old days.

I had an 1986 and a 1992. The 86 was a great car but some a-hole hit me and the handling was never quite right after that. I sold it and bought the 1992. That was the worst mistake I ever made. By 1992 VW had moved production to Mexico and I had so much trouble from it that it eventually broke me of owning VW's.

Already had 2 GTI's, but I would go for an early 80's Scirocco "S" in good condition. IIRC, they were lighter than a GTI, handled a little bit better due to weight distribution, and all the drivetrain components were interchangable.

IMHO, When they went to the MKII Scirocco in 1982, it got too heavy and the styling went to shit.

I owned a white '83 Rabbit GTI for seven years (from 1989 to 1996). It was a stock 1.8 liter, 8 valve engine. I don't think VW offers four-valve heads until 1987. That motor was a torquey SOB. Loved to drive it, except on the highway. 5th gear was WAY too short, would wind the motor out to stay at 80 mph. Previous suggestion to install a Euro 5th gear was wise. I also had to replace the axle shafts after about 100K miles, and the struts/rear shocks at 115K. Driving it hard took it's toll on the suspesion with some sticky Pirellis on the stock 14" AL wheels. The biggest performance robbing item on a Rabbit GTI was the 4into1 cast iron exhaust manifold. It sucked. The single down pipe was WAY to restrictive. The best solution was to replace it with a later model dual down pipe/manifold. Opened up the top end big time. I never did it, as my GTI was a daily driver, and an only vehicle. The other easy upgrade was larger roll-bars front and rear, and a strut tower brace in the front to really stiffen it up and give much more responsive steering feel.
