Agreed. Long live the Anglosphere! I'm willing to bet that the average American teen is just as fat and soft as the average British kid. There's probably just a higher percentage of them running away to join the Foreign Legion because most American teens can't find France on a map, much less know anything about the Legion. |

As much as I hate the French people and their government, the facts are that the French had a battalion in Afghanistan to assist us. They accorded themselves quite well and were actually highly regarded. It was not a Foreign Legion unit.
My source is an O6 who was involved in the international operations side of the house for the Army. It shocked the shit out of me too. |

The statement is meaningless. Yes the Legion is tougher and made up of mercs. BUT you have to realize first that right now they are probably getting recruits that cannot make it into the British forces (since they are at war) and who do not otherwise qualify for any of the NGOs operating in Iraq and Afghanistan (who pay much more). So if they are only getting 3rd and 4th tier recruits, it only makes sense that they wouldn't be up to snuff. That's like saying Americans are dumb based on only the applicants to community colleges while ignoring the top tier schools.

There is a reason people leave their own countries during war time and attempt to join others. It is NOT because they are the baddest motherfuckers on the block.
It usually is because they (a) can't get into their own countries' military, (b) they are afraid to actually go to war and seek service in a country that is not currently at war, or (c) they are disloyal shitbags who would rather serve another country than their own. None of these options make for good recruits. |

It seems to be a thing that the Legion recruits from whatever place kinda sucks at the time. Right now supposedly the Legion gets a lot of people from the Balkans. Post WW2, it was Germans.
England doesn't suck, to live there that is. So from there the FFL will get a few people who are badass, and a lot of people who think the Legion is going to be some kind of romantic adventure, with forts in the desert and all that shit. Which it isn't.
People in fucked up places in Africa tend to not be afraid of anybody. They're afraid of the Legion. There's a reason for this. The Legion would be high on my "don't fuck with these people" list. |

I'm always amazed by reaction to the word "France'.
Americans seem to be unable to understand a difference between the French as a people, and the French government. The French government is a reflection of the political aspirations of the people of Paris. For simplicity's sake, just think of Paris as a different country, that is filled with (insert your favorite french insults here). If they find that you're American in Normandy, though... just *try* paying for your own drinks. |
