Glock generations?

Can someone fill me in on what the difference is in the various generations of Glocks?

Example: G19 2nd Generation or G31 3rd Generation

From what I recall:
1st generation: no finger grooves-smooth grips
2nd generation: finger grooves
3rd generation: finger grooves and weapons rail under barrel

I thought the 2nd gen didn't have finger grooves, but it had the textured grips instead.

2nd explodes when you look at it funny and mention buying a 1911
3rd comes pre-exploded from the factory.

1st Gen = Only Glock 17s and a VERY few G19s (no checkering, very smooth grips)
2nd Gen = Has checkering on front and back strap of grip
2.5 Gen = Glock 26 and 27s have finger grooves but not checkering at the finger grooves.
3rd Gen = Has finger grooves with checkering between them, 'thumb rests' and full size and compact models have rails.

2nd Gen does not have finger grooves. I like 2nd Gen better than 3rd personally. I don't use a tac rail anyway, so the lack of one on 2nd gen models doesn't bother me.

Here is a great site that can answer just about any Glock questions you have. I think there is an explaination of the Generations in there somewhere.

My G30 has finger grooves, checkering in the grooves, but no weapons rail. I guess that makes it a Generation 2.75?

Instead of Generation 2, you have either Deep Space 9 or Voyager.

Not really it's a 3rd Gen. The G29s and G30s just recently started coming with rails. They're compact models. The subcompact models (G26, G27, G33) don't have rails. They started using the rails on G29s and G30 because these pistols are optional for some departments who use the G20 and G21 and they wanted all officers to have the capability to mount a light w/o additional hardware.
