I have a friend from Chicago who I let shoot my AR last weekend and now he's hook and wants to get one.  He says they are illegal in Chicago and handguns are too.  I find this hard to beleive.  Could somebody please give me the entire scoop on gun control laws in Chicago?  Thanks a bunch.

he's right.  All firearms are pretty much illegal inside the city limits of chicago.

50 caliber rifles, most semi automatics, all handguns and mags over 12 rounds are illegal

Handguns are not illegal but you have to have it registered, and by the way Chicago wont take an registrations.

So is it legal for him to own one and just not keep it inside city limits?  This country is Fucked up!  The one place you need one the most they tell you can't have one.  Good thing I don't live there.  They would raid my house and broadcast it all over the news saying I had an arsenal!  God Damn Liberals.

You cannot own ANY(IIRC) gun inside the city limits.  You cannot carry anywhere in the state except if you are a current LEO, or an ex-LEO with a class and qualifier(my dad has a co-worker that's an ex-LEO and just got his ex-LEO CHL).

If you live in the suburbs, you're fine for owning, except for SBR's, suppressors, and MG's, and other class 3 toys.

Any other toys, AR's, AK's etc, are okay.

Yes I know we have shitty gun laws but other than that it's a nice state, and yes we have good pizza.  Except Gino's East went out of business(at least the one in Oak Lawn).

Chicago doesn't allow handguns. Period.  End of story.  Or any other guns for that matter.

I don't know of any registration, other than getting a FOID(FirearmOwnersIdentificationCard) a.k.a the card of the Commie overlords.

You left out the part about needing a permit from the state (FOID) to possess any guns and to buy ammo.

Whoops!

It don' madda.  The gun laws in IL are bad enough that they are not even worth learning them.  Just say no to Illinois!!  Great place to visit (Chicago), bad place to live.

Not necessarily.  I spent my formative years(birth to age 8) in the Mount Greenwood section of the city(southwest part of town), and then moved to Beverly(section next to it, a tad more yuppier but still middle class)and stayed till age 11.

My GF currently lives in the Garfield Ridge section of the city(near Midway Airport).

Those are really the two good areas in the city, besides downtown.

Can you provide proof of this, as my reading of the IL statutes, there is no provision for ANY CCW aside from on your own property or in your place of business?(Other than LEO's, and Officers of the Court.)

Deej, you're wrong.  You can own rifles, and shotguns in Chicago, but they must be registered every year.  ARs are not allowed.  Handguns must also be registered, but they stopped registering handguns in I believe 1983.  There are many legally owned handguns in the city.

If you live in the city you can buy stuff and store it outside the city legally.

As far as I know-from what I have read here and have heard first hand from other gun owners:

-You can carry a gun on your property.(My uncle carries a .307 to go after troublesome coyotes)
-You can carry a gun in your business with the owner's permission.

Anything else is a nono.

Shit.

I couldn't remember if it was only long guns or if it was all handguns banned.

IIRC Tillman was one that had some big fuss not too long ago because she wanted an armed guard near her office because some suspicious person came in and was bothering her.

But she already has a fucking CHL...for god's sake...but Joe Schmo can't have a fucking CHL.

Longarms are fine in the city, but must be registered, and not on the city's "assault weapon" list.
No handgun registrations have been allowed since 1982, but old registrations can be renewed.

In the 'burbs, all is well, except for a few suburbs with handgun bans, and a county AW ban that only applies to unincorporated areas.  FOID card is required by the state... costs $5, and takes a couple of months to get.  No class 3 or CCW.

If you live in the suburbs, you're fine for owning,

You forgot about Morton Grove, who passed a handgun ban way back, I think the late 60's.  It was held up in court because it did not ban all guns, and "therefore does not violate the 2nd Amendment."

Chicago has worked hard to export its gun laws to the surrounding suburbs.

IIRC here again:
-Morton Grove:Handgun Ban
-Oak Park:Handgun Ban
-Skokie-Handgun Ban
-Wilmette-Handgun Ban

I can't really think of any more, but I think Evanston has a ban too.

If you live in any other suburbs you're fine for owning, but the collar counties surrounding Cook are more gun-friendly.

Wow.... i better tell my old college roomate. He lived in PA all his life and moved up to Chicago a couple years ago. I doubt he checked the gun laws [who does] before entering the city; since I'm SURE he still has a Mosberg 590 & Beretta 92FS.

So what would the legal complications be? He lives in a VERY nice part of town so I doubt there will be door to door inspections. I think the mayor lives in his complex of townhomes. He tells me all the time about it.....

Is it a stiff fine? Jailtime? I mean he's a solid citizen and rather wealthy. I'm sure the rules are a little different if you're a felon or a known druggie. If anyone knows the penalty for a 1st time charge let me know. I want to give him a heart attack next time I see him.

Oh No?  Just let his FOID expire, Chicago has a really neat list of those, and they DO come and get'em. (looking for link now.)

Thats the thing I dont think he ever registered them with anyone. He simply had them in the moving truck when he moved to Chicago and assumed its all ok. In PA there's no such thing as a license to posses a firearm.

I know for a fact he's never "registered" them because I asked him once about it. He told me its nearly impossible to buy a new firearm in the city but he just assumed that since originally they were legally bought, then it was all on the up and up.

I think he's gonna flip over this one.

It would really suck to have a gun and not be able to leave the house with it!  Just remind him that mere possession w/o FOID is a crime, add to that supposed AW's, and he'll have a real unhappy day!

Confiscation of Registered Guns Begins in Illinois

Chicago Anti Gun Enforcement (CAGE) unit. This elite squad, operated jointly by the Illinois State Police, the Chicago Police Department, and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, supposedly exists to identify illegal gunrunners. However, information gained by the ISRA makes it clear that the CAGE unit is targeting law-abiding citizens, not criminal gunrunners.

The Chicago Police Department and the Illinois State Police have teamed up to make good on Mayor Daley's pledge that, if it were up to him, nobody would have a gun. Daley and his elite "CAGE" unit are apparently taking advantage of gun privacy loopholes to pinpoint certain individuals for inclusion in the confiscation program.

The ISRA is following up on leads in one case that has disturbing implications. An elderly first-generation Chicago resident was recently paid a visit by an Illinois State Police trooper. After asking to come inside the man's home, the trooper asked if the man owned a gun - to which he replied yes. The trooper then directed the individual to surrender the firearm. The man complied with the officer's demand and the trooper left with the gun. And the story gets better...

The gun in question was purchased legally by the man in the 1970s shortly after he became a U.S. citizen. When Chicago's infamous gun registration scheme went into effect in the early 1980s, the man registered the firearm as per the requirement. However, over the years, the fellow apparently forgot to re-register the firearm, and forgot to renew his Illinois FOID Card.

So...what does this all mean?

In the last edition of The Illinois Shooter, we reported on the activities of a shady taskforce known as the Chicago Anti Gun Enforcement (CAGE) unit.

Thanks to a ruling by a liberal federal judge, the CAGE unit now has the name of every single person in the United States who, since 1992, lawfully purchased more than one handgun in the period of a week. The CAGE unit also has all the makes, models and serial numbers of those guns. In essence, the Chicago Police Department is now registering guns and gun owners nationwide.

The ISRA has also learned that the CAGE unit has compiled a list of families where more than one person in that family holds a FOID card. Acting on that information, the CAGE unit is now contacting gun shops where those families have shopped, and is illegally registering all guns purchased by those families.

Now, it appears that the CAGE unit is scrubbing Chicago's gun registration list against the list of FOID card holders. Indications are that folks who have let their registrations and FOIDs lapse will have their guns confiscated. We have to wonder how long it will be until state troopers show up at the doors to confiscate the guns of non-Chicago residents who have let their FOIDs expire.

More later as this story develops.
