I think you'd be limited to Mini-14, Mini-30, M1 Garand, and the M1 Carbine for California.

mini 14 and garands are ok. Oh yea, dont bring a 16 shot, marlin 22lr model 60 into NJ, its concidered an assault rifle.

My Garand travels with me whenever I go places the M1A and AR might cause trouble.
Heck, when you figure: CMP Danish Grade Garand $420 delivered 30 clips $15 Sling $5 3 Bandoleers and carboards for em $10 Combo tool and cleaning kit $15 Lifetime supply of Grease $5 Where else can you buy that much 50 state legal firepower for under $500 and be getting a piece of hisory too? Want to aviod appering like a gun nut? Toss in some WWII militaria and you become a "collector"! |

It would be according to your needs. As far as legality any lever action carbine should work, Marlin makes them in pistol calibers all the way up to the 450 Marlin. They look very unassuming but will work just as good in a pinch as they did 100 years ago. Especially with a good ghost ring sight.

Can't beat a mini-14 ranch rifle for just a travel companion. Obviously they are about as accurate as a 4 year old's first lesson in standing at the pot, but hey will always shoot. Besides the ranch rifle won't be considered too soon as an assault weapon.
If you are not talking about a defense type rifle, why not get a remmington bolt. Styer scouts might be a good gun, but way to much money for a road rifle. |

Might I suggest a Remington 7400 in either .308/22"bbl., or, the .30-06/18"bbl. carbine?
10-rd. mags are available and if you $pring for the Wood models, they won't have those scary all-black synthetic stocks. With a low-power scope in Weaver mount and rings, it'll look innocuous enough, but, will have maximum power and a decent payload. I like my -06 Carbine/Synthetic... |

If semi's are Taboo, consider a the assult rifle of the old west. A lever action is more socially acceptable. 30/30,.44mag, .357, .45 Colt, or 44-40 gives significant capacity, accuracy, and stopping power.

if you want legal EVERYWHERE, then i would go with some kind of repeter. the alaskan guild rifles are really cool. they break down super small. i think htey are marlin, or winchester. but i think thye are cool

If you want one that is powerful but appears innocous I have to also chime in with the few that mentioned a Winchester 94 type rifle in .44 mag. It holds a lot of rounds, it's powerful, it's quick, and with a 16" bbl. it's handy. Everyone I've handled is accurate enough and it's a hoot to play with. Lot's of noise, action and fun.

I agree on the lever guns they don't seem to draw much attn anywhere, they carry well and they are very fast to shoulder. I carry a lever gun chambered in 45-70 more often than any other rifle. If I lived in the lower 48 I would probably keep a lever gun in 30-30 or 45 LC fairly close, besides all the reasons to carry one they are a lot of fun to use.

Savage makes a VERY inreresting stainless Scout rifle in a number of calibers including my favorite, .308.
No offense, but compared to a good bolt-action, lever actions just don't cut it. |

Granted, there’s no one right answer to this question.
My personal choice – and what I’d really like to get – would be a clip fed Savage Model 99 lever action rifle in 358 Winchester. (Though a .308 Winchester would make a lot more sense.) Savages are about as innocuous looking as you can get. (Why do I always wait till a firearm is discontinued before I want one??) Actually, I have to agree with raf, bolt actions really are better than lever actions. While there are better bolt guns out there, a Lee-Enfield Jungle Carbine wouldn’t be a bad choice. |

Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine..short..handy..powerful when loaded with standard 303 Mk VII ammo (174 grain FMJ).
It is a Bolt Action with 10 round detachable magazines, has a very fast action to work. Since it IS a BOLT Action...their is NO problem in regards to running afoul with "assault weapons" laws in different states. The Jungle Carbine Replicas are also VERY cheap..around $140. You can also load them with standard Hunting Ammunition 150 or 180 grain soft points. If you reload your own ammo, you can take pulled bullets from 7.62x39mm ammo and load them onto the .303 case. Since the bullet diameter for the Russian ammo is really around .311. So then you get a nice little short range round...a 123 grain 30 caliber bullet being driven at around 3000 fps. Or if you just HAVE to have something in 7.62 NATO..you can get one of the No.7 "Jungle Carbines" [img]http://www.conjay.com/_borders/Jungle_002.JPG[/img] |

Here, due to the laws, I run with an original British JC, a No.5, in .303. Short, robust, relaible, and capable of accurate fire up to a good distance.
