I read meteorites don't leave marks on stone, but this metal glob does.
I found it on an island in Town Lake in Austin, about 1" under the surface. I think in one of the pictures you can see a little pebble fused to the surface. It's about 2.5 inches across, relatively flat with a hole in the middle, and quote heavy. It is not magnetic. When scratched across brick, it leaves a dark grey streak. It has a slightly greasy feel when rubbed. It is also quite soft; I'm able to mark it with a thumbnail. Anyone know what it is?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this is metallic material. I found it with a metal detector. It is not iron.
It weighs 84 grams. |

It might be gold. You can tell by putting nitric acid on it. If the acid eats it, its not gold. Another way of telling is if mercury sticks to it.

It seems pretty heavy to me, although without a comparable piece of lead it's hard to tell. Here's a pic for scale.

It's grey. I think the wood in the first pic was reflecting off of it. It leaves a dark grey streak. I can also knock off bits to reveal a shiny light grey part under the exterior surface. |

How to recognize slag
Slag can be black, gray, whitish, or reddish -- and some spots may shine with the colors of the rainbow. Some pieces of slag have rounded bubble holes, but these are often mixed with crumbly and smooth glassy spots Some pieces of slag fizz in acid or vinegar. Other rocks that look like slag Scoria: Scoria is often less glassy looking than slag. Scoria is usually more uniform in color. The bubble holes in scoria are usually more rounded and regular in shape. |

I wouldn't think it's slag since it looks like it's pretty solid metal. I'm leaning towards lead at this point since it's so soft, I wonder where it came from, though.
Anyone have other thoughts? |

Lead. I found some where it looked as if someone had a fire and nmelted down a battery or something and the lumps looked suspiciously like that one.
