I was perusing Ebay looking for a deal on the Band of Brothers series and I see a buttload of Asian copies of the series.

What's the deal here?

I suspect that you're not catching what I'm driving at here.

Are you talking about other languages? Because people world wide may, in fact, enjoy the series like Americans, but are you talking about the seller having his site in Asian, or Asian bootlegs?

I think he means the ones with both English and Chinese/Japanese/whatever characters on the box and offering both soundtracks. When I bought BoB, it was $60 for the true American version in the tin, or $30 for the English/Asian version in a printed cardboard box.

Yes, I'm referring to what I am assuming are asian bootlegs.

Do they work?

Would I have little chinese characters in subtitles?

There is a market for them therefore people sell them.

I bought On the Beach (2000), the showtime remake as an import from South Korea on eBay. Its not available on DVD in the US.

These DVDs are frickin' bootlegs from China. There is probably one legitimate copy of BOB in the whole country, and a billion bootleg copies. eBay should crack down on this crap, but they won't,because they really don't care where their money is coming from. Meanwhile, the US slides further into the abyss.

/ we were getting Korean DVDs from eBay, until we soon realized they were Chinese bootlegs, too.

Yeah the government should really pass laws to make that kind of stuff illegal....oh...wait...

IMO we have too many laws protecting the useless entertainment industry. Yeah thats real smart lets bend over backwards for an industry that makes a product of questionable value that can be easily reproduced for cheap. Instead of doing stuff to product our more vital and necessary industries.

My friend brought back Spiderman in Pakistan a year before it was even released in theatres. A lot of the movie wasn't edited out and I thought it was better than the final, polished work.

Price: $2.

I'm sure YOU were unhappy when Napster bit the dust. Yes, those prima-donna "artistes" should be glad to accept a few pennies for their pathetic talent, shouldn't they?

/and you should work for free, too!

eBay has been flooded with bootleg DVD's over the last couple of years.  Almost useless to search for DVD's on eBay these days because of the high number of bootlegs.

They care a lot if you sell firearm related crap through them.

Do not buy the BoB disc set off of eBay.  I got the military set as a gift years ago because all I could find locally were the sets that came in the tin.  Anywho, some discs are mislabeled (Crossriads instead of Crossroads), some discs were scratched and unplayable, and some of the trinkets specific to the Military edition were missing.

The person who bought me the set saved about half price but I ended up having to buy another set locally just to get a good set of DVDs.

Depends on the copy.  Most of the ones I've bought (which look completely legit, maybe they are) are fine.  I think the VCD's have permanent subtitles in them, though.  The only problem one that I have is a "March of the Penguins" I bought in thailand, which was in an English-language box ("Narrayed by Morgan Freeman" even), but which turned out to be in Chinese and Thai and French, with English subtitles only.

I can get any DVD for $3 here, and they fill any request. Plus, one DVD will have 4-5 full movies on it, I have the first 4 seasons of 24 all on one DVD each.

Hey pal,

I make my living in that questionable industry! I feed my family and keep a roof over us too. A lot of my friends do as well. That useless industry employs tens of thousands of people all over this country who in turn support their local economies.

Useless my ass!

Every bootleg copy takes money out of our pockets and sends it overseas. Folks gripe about outsourcing and NAFTA, but don't blink an eye at buying bootlegs!

I got a Chinese copy of Badder Santa recently.  It worked fine, though I wouldn't have bought it if I had known it was coming via mail from the PRC.

Good thing I don't foresee renewing my clearance anytime soon
