Nope.  I'd stick with a regular or a well-established dealer.

Or ask if they have e-bay feedback to prove they are worthy of your business.

No unless a much more senior board member would vouch for them.  If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Gary

How does that work?  The purchase price, by the way, is north of $500.

My 2nd post (and only been a member for 12 days) was on the EE.  Sold an Upper FTF with a new Member.

If the person gives you good quality pictures, and you discuss all terms up front, and establish good communication, why not?  Everyone has to start somewhere.

Have it go through an escrow if you aren't sure.

my rule of thumb is "don't buy from someone who isn't more than a day's drive away."

just in case.

(also, no P.O. Boxes)

I'm just as trustworthy now as I was when I only had 10 posts.

Exactly.  Post count doesn't always tell the story.  I think the thought of someone with a high post count comes to mind here.

There are honest people out there.  Call them and talk to them.  If someone is an ass on the phone, no way.

If they have good feedback, yes.  Be sure to get a home and work phone #.

Most folks here on AR-15.con are A-OK

I am not convinced that anything really happens if you call the postal service with a fraud complaint related to a money order.

I would be wary but talk to the guy on the phone and get his home and work contact info.

I think they increased the amount above 500 in the last few years. You can always buy two or more money orders.

I read that link too.  I think the USPS would tell you sorry if you were ripped off using one of their money orders.

Yes, but I'd protect myself.

Start by getting a phone number and calling the guy up. See if he sounds shady.

Check sites like zabbasearch and see if the address he gives you matches his name.

It helps to know someone in the same town or nearby. Offer to have a friend go pick up the item and ship it for you/deliver payment. Do you know anyone from the board who lives nearby who could do this for you (and who you trust)?

Pay using your credit card if you can so that if you get shafted you can retract the charges.

That section refers to forging money order, stealing them from the post office and stuff like that, it doesn't have anything to do with receiving a money order and not sending someone the stuff it was for.

There are 6 specific things listed. "intent to defraud" qualifies for our purpose.

Whoever, with intent to defraud, falsely makes, forges,

counterfeits, engraves, or prints any order in imitation of or

purporting to be a blank money order or a money order issued by or

under the direction of the Post Office Department or Postal

and if thats not enough for you. uscode.house.gov/uscode-cgi/fastweb.exe?getdoc+uscview+t17t20+671+46++%28mail%20fra

So in essence, if you sign a postal money order knowing that you are ripping off the sender of the money order, you are committing a federal crime?
