WHy does soaking in Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) aid in minor aches/bruises/sprains?

my guess is that it creates an osmotic gradient and forces excess cell water (swelling) to leave the body and go to the bath in an attempt to equalize.
Anyone know the real reason?

if that were the case then regular water would make you swell and have severe electrolyte imbalnces due to osmosis and diffusion.
