I don't hide them and can't think of a single reason to do so.

Watch IT TAKES A THIEF.
When they break into a home, it's ALWAYS using stuff you left out - ladders, sledgehammers, loose rocks/bricks, etc...

Most home break-ins (80%) are committed by someone known to the victim--most often someone allowed in the house prior. Typically it's friends of teenagers who live in the home. We almost never have company here, have no teenagers (wife's kids are grown and gone) and everyone who knows me would be afraid I would catch them. I'm not trying to sound like some Rambo bad-ass, but I have a VERY bad attitude about thieves and everyone who knows me, even a little, knows that. So far so good.
I did have a safe manufacturer tell me any safe can easily be opened by cutting the top off like a sardine can with just a Sawzall. It's very noisy and time-consuming so it's rarely done in the home--but bolt that bad boy down so it can't be hauled away, especially if you have it in the garage.
