When I started smoking I lived in Michigan and cigarettes were $1/pack. I kept smoking through about half a dozen tax hikes until they were about $5 a pack. Now I live in Texas where cigarettes are about $3.50/pack.
My point, price hasn't stopped me from smoking yet. When I quit again it will be because I want to stop smoking, not because of the price. |

Uhm, don't people know that they can grow their own tobacco and roll their own smokes? Has that bit of information been forgotten?
I guess for the same reason that people wont roll their own eggrolls or fry their own doughnuts, they wont make their own smokes. |

Black market opportunity? For the average smoker I'd think saving the equivalent of a car payment (or the gasoline bill) would do the trick. I sure wish EVERYONE would quit smoking and ride a bike and bankrupt CA. |

My Dad paid with his life 2 years ago. I miss him...
 For all the smokers out there, especially with kids, think of them next time you light one up and see if it's worth it. The choice is ultimately yours. For my Dad, he figured the damage was done and what was the point of stopping. Well, if he would have, I might be watching the OU game with him tonight. |

When I quit they were $3.00. At the time I was trying to decide on a Leupold VX II or a VXIII for my deer rifle. When I realized I would smoke the price difference in only 30 days I quit and bought the VX III. That was 5 years ago well worth the effort.

No, I don't. People will pay what they can and sometimes can't afford. The amount of tax doesn't really come into play IMO. If somebody wants something bad enough, anything, they will pay for it. |

Yeah! I'm quitting drinking as soon as I run out! On the other hand, I quit smoking about 700 times, 700 days in a row, before it "took." WW's right. You should start failing right now. Have quite for eight weeks now and I will never go back.
They are not like cigarettes were thirty years or even ten years ago. So many cancer causing agents and poisons somthing like over a hundred just waiting to do you in. They are nothing more than a debilitating slow suicide. The older you get the more damage is done. The upside is extra money to buy guns and outdoor realated gear with. Sounds and feels like a better deal to me!!! Hopefully the comming new year will produce many resolute non-smokers here at arfcom. There is perscription medical care available and the nicotine patch theropy has been sucsessfull for me. Good Hunting! |

A smoker (or any addict) gets the one thing he or she wants most over and over and over again, 10 or 20 or 30 or even 40 times a day.
A smoker is killing him or herself, and knows it, but still smokes. You really think money is even a consideration? The better question is at what price do smokers start commiting crimes to feed their habit. |

The more profitable the black market is, the larger it gets. Same goes for alcohol, cigarettes, grugs, guns, prostitution, porn, anything else deemed "bad". True, raising the taxes will cause some people to quit, but if enough people do that, the .gov will start whining about loss of revenue. They are already starting to whine about loss of revenue from gas taxes due to more efficient cars. Consider that many places give tax breaks for hybrids, but are now reconsidering that since they are losing money on them. Always remember: The more money the government controls, the more control they have over the money, and the more control they have over YOU. |

Started smoking when they were roughly $.75-1.00 a pack. They are now aound $2.75 a pack if you buy them by the carton.
My take is that the smokers in Kali will simply buy over the internet, no tax....just that simple. |
