I've got Spybot S&D and AdAware.
Is that enough, or do I need anything else? McAfee Anti-spyware? What do I need, what works? I'd like to keep my relatively new computer Edited: title to reflect my desire to keep spyware, not spam, off my computer. |
avoiding internet porn sites will help with both problems....
Are you talking about "Spam" which is unsolicited E-mail or Spyware/Adware?
Spybot and Adaware have nothing to do with E-mail. |
Dammit. I do mean spyware. I guess I'll have to re-title the thread or start a new one. Thanks. |

Saran wrap? |

good one |

use Firefox for web browsing. This will stop most of your Spyware problems.
Microsoft AntiSpyware works pretty well. As long as you're running XP tho..
It used to be "Giant AntiSpyware" until ol' Bill bought it from them. It works 'actively' the same as Anti-Virus software, It scans what's coming in and alerts on bad crap. It's also free, btw... Linky HERE to NON M$ download site, so you don't have to go through their bullshit windows validation crap. |
Haven't there been a lot of security flaws found in Firefox recently? |
Thanks! |

I'd agree if the question was quoted as spyware and not spam. But you quoted it as spam. In the case of spyware, yes, Linux. I have Ubuntu Linux and no spyware at all. |

Everything you need to know about Malware (Spyware & Adware) and you can download all of it for free. BigDozer66 |

None of the commercial shit really works... AdAware is one of the better programs, but the best solution is (a) stop using Internet Explorer - get Firefox or Mozilla instead, and (b) don't click ANY popups... The vast majority of spyware is INTERNET EXPLORER specific - since switching to firefox I haven't had much trouble with it... |

Dont look at porn |

Downloaded....................and free of malware. Gotta love this forum. Thanks everybody. |

I don't run any of that shit and I never get spyware...
WTF are you people doing to get it? |
It works just fine with 2000. I have it on 40 machines at work. |
I use Norton Internet Security Spyware Edition. It works very well for me.
How do you know exactly that you don't have spyware if you don't run any anti-spyware software? Not all spyware produces popups. |
My mistake...... I think when it was first released, it was only available for XP, but I can't remember now..... Been a while. Lot more important stuff on MY mind, these days...... Good to know tho, thanks. Just glad it worked out for the guy |

It's FAR from just porn sites...... There's tons of shit out there on otherwise seemingly innocent sites. If you assume that, you're a fool nowadays, and it's just a matter of time before you get hit. |
That's a good point...I had a lot of problems with ie, and didn't surf any porn... |

That's an easy question to answer: You run a Mac... |

Not going to read all of this so if duplicate, sorry:
1 Suggestion if it is Windows is: Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) While it is free anyway. Also: There is no Silver Bullet. |
I use spybot S&D and never have a problem b/c it has an "immunize" feature to stop spyware before it ever get's to your PC. Zonealarm Plus is also good because it blocks popups VERY well. |
or don't use the internet, or don't turn on your computer, etc... there alot more obvious answers. Thanks for the hint but I think we are talking about PCs. |

+1 Add a good anti-virus (Norton) and ... -keep them all up to date -keep Windoze up to date -run system scans overnight or whenever you're not using the PC |

Lots of good answers here.
First, don't use IE, switch to Firefox (had to be said AGAIN) If you don't want to avoid all porn/gambling/free game etc. sites then you will have trouble. Now, the corporation I work for has a few owner/officer types that have made it clear that they WILL enjoy porn, gambling and any other thing that they want while they are at work. All the anti-ad and spyware programs in the world won't work for long under that kind of use. I was introduced to a company called Faronics and specifically, a product called FreezeX by a colleague. I installed it on these machines and have never had a single instance of any malware of any type since. What it does is takes a snapshot or image of the entire system at the time of install and then simply does not allow any changes to the system whatsoever past that point. No registry changes, to execution of any type of executable file, no installers, no trojans, no viruses, no anything. It's been a godsend. The only downside is that it also won't allow you to install anything without first entering a password and turning it off. After installation you turn it back on and it adds the authorized changes to its image and locks it all down again. it only takes a few seconds to do this and it's worth it. I've got machines that have been running for over a year and they absolutely are as clean as the day they were imaged. You can't even deliberately infect them with a virus |

Does the microsoft spyware software work with mozilla and firefox?
It's browser independent. It doesn't use the browser to do its work. So yes. |

The easiest way to keep spyware off your system is don't surf the web on an Administrator account.
Every body does it, and everybody gets infected, which is totally stupid because if they were using a "Limited" (XP Home) or "User" (XP Pro, 2k) account then none of that crap would get installed in the first place. Even if you tried. Windows won't let you or any program install anything unless you have Admin rights. This is what I just can't understand - Windows has this protection built in, but no one uses it. The only downside is you have to use the other Admin account any time you want to install software, update a driver, etc. But how often do you do that? OTOH, malware is trying to get on your system every day. The easiest way to fix this is to create another account, give it Admin priviledges, then log on that account and demote your original account. It's that easy to keep your Windows box spyware free. |
