For example, I can transfer pictures, ringtones, and other data from my cellphone to my PC wirelessly via BT. |

+1 The automakers plan to replace the maze of wire looms/harnesses in your car with bluetooth networks for the data multiplexing buses for the various networks within the car (powertrain, body/chassis/suspension, transmission, communications, etc...) |

God, I hope not, with all the trouble I've had with Bluetooth. Wouldn't a short-range, reliable, high-bandwidth solution be better? Or just leaving it wired, for that matter. |

True, it does irk me that a lot of people wont do a simple google search to find an answer to their question. Instead, they post it on here, taking away bandwidth from wonderful threads such as "I was just slapped in the face by a set of boobies. Should I call the cops?" (this is a really great thread, be sure to check it out) Regardless of their inability to do it themselves, I still like to be as helpful as possible. |

The OEMs are obsessed with weight reduction and clutter reduction. There's a lot of mass from the wiring harnesses on today's car. I suppose they may utilize another short-range wireless system or perhaps fiber optics in the future. Last I heard, BT was a prime candidate. |

Bluetooth is basically a system to replace device-connection cables (like from phones to earpieces, or keyboards, mice & printers to computers) in the same way that 802.11x/WiFi replaces network cables...
The idea is that eventually all the stuff you hook up with cables to your phone or computer can just run wirelessly.... It works better for cell phones than PCs, however, since with the cell phone you expect your crap to need batteries... Having to change or charge your keyboard would eliminate the advantage over just using a USB cable... In the end however, it's just as bad as every other RF technology BESIDES WiFi... Works better than the old IRDA, though... |

The 'best' solution would probably be a single Cat-5 or USB type cable, instead of the damn rat's nest that is a modern wire harness... Anything you can do over BT you can do over C5, and that WOULD make the wiring alot easier... Wireless in my car? Sorry, but what if it hits interfearance? And you KNOW some idiot would make a jammer & fuck with people's cars just for the fun of it (carjacking? how 'bout carhacking?)..... |

Secure? You are joking. I saw a fellow with a "Bluetooth Rifle" - looks like a rifle with a scope and a highly specialized antenna for the barrel. He was on a building 1/4th mile away from a skyscraper, and in 15-20 minutes, he had gleaned so much personal data from the building's occupants you would not believe it.

Read the above link. You are crazy to trust it for secure communications.
 The recent rains had washed away most of the smog from the usually murky Los Angeles skies, so we could easily see the giant high-rise buildings in the financial district. For the purposes of the shoot, we hooked up the BlueSniper gun to a laptop computer, instead of using the Gumstix computer. This allowed us to see in real-time the Bluetooth devices that were detected. John pointed the BlueSniper at the AON building, which was 0.6 miles (just about 1 km) from our position (this distance was verified by GPS after the shoot). It didn't take long for the MAC address of Bluetooth devices to appear on the laptop's screen. After a few seconds, John pointed the gun at the Library Tower / US Bank Building, which is the tallest building in Los Angeles. The building was .75 miles (a little over 1 km) from our position. As more Bluetooth devices started appearing, John said, "This building is full of Bluetooth! Look we got some Blackberries!" He also explained that, with multiple guns, it would be possible to track a single Bluetooth device as the person walked around. In less than a few minutes, twenty devices were detected—all at distances over a half mile away! We decided to quickly conclude the scan, given police activity in the area earlier in the day from a bomb scare. |

OBD-III will integrate the PCM with stuff like On-Star and other law enforcement tools so they can remotely stop your vehicle. By the time OBD-III is implemented, you will probably have electric steering/brakes/throttle/actuated valves/etc... so I wouldn't be surprised if they can remotely control your vehicle (just to pull it off to the shoulder). |

How right you are tripledouble, I could have... AND you could have posted a reply that didnt show what a bitter ass stick in the mud you are. I was here checking on a post I made and thought I would ask. I unlike you do not sit in front of the computer all day googling shit, I have a job, I only jump on when I can find the time, and "I" didnt think it was such a big, huge fucking deal to ask a question. remember guys NEVER ask a question on here unless you google it first. Me thinks tripledouble owns Google stock.....

As previously stated, BlueTooth is a wireless communications standard that was intended to replace annoying cables. It is designed for short distances and for applications that don't require too much bandwidth, but the most important thing about BlueTooth is that it is designed to work with very low power consumption. It is assumed that most BlueTooth devices will be battery-powered portable devices, so it was important that the system work while using only a trickle of power.
802.11 networking, especially the G standard, is capable of much higher data speeds, but it also uses a LOT more power to work. An average cell phone battery would be drained in less than 15 minutes, whereas a BlueTooth phone can work (say, with a BlueTooth headset) for an hour or more on the same size battery. -Troy |
