I was outside listening to the night noises, and realized that I could her the freeway.  I live about 1/4 mile away from the 405.

Here in SoCal, the nearest freeway is never that far away

I used to live about 150 feet from the woodlands parkway. Constant traffic noise. I have lived about 100 yards from sunset highway in Portland. That was real bad.  It's worse for me because I sleep days.  Now I am in a woody cul-d-sac and have no traffic noise. Just the teenager next door and all his buddies

I'm in East-central Kansas, in a medium sized (~30k) town, and I'm less than 3/4 mile from the highway.

Truck driving tests your ability to sleep around noise, what with the highway and other trucks.  Ever heard some asshole's Peterbilt with his nifty 5" straight-piped C15 Caterpillar and his jake brake?

About 5 miles away from a highway.

I was visiting Montana a few years ago, sitting on the back porch of a friend's house.
All of a sudden, he grabbed me and said, "Do you hear that?"
I said that I didn't hear anything.
He said, "That's right, you're hearing nothing.  How often do you hear nothing back home?  No cars, no trucks.  Nothing."

Good for road trips, bad for buggin' out.

Then again, I do have Columbia and Willamette Rivers access just down the bluff.

Just a little over 2 miles to I-465 (the loop around Indianapolis). Of course living inside I-465 I have many other very busy local streets I hear all the traffic from, such as Washington St which is about a half a mile from us. In the winter it is much worse as we can see and hear all the traffic since the leaves on all the trees are gone and not protecting us from the sites and sounds.
This morning I was woken up by sirens and helicopters, 2nd morning this week. I really need to get out of the city.

The back side of my property butts up against a US highway.  My house is about 300 feet from the highway with railroad tracks just on the other side, and I-85 about a half-mile past that.

I can't hear the Interstate over the noise of the highway.

The train's the only bad part.  There's a crossing just down the highway from me in both directions, so the damn trains blow their whistles just as they're passing their closest.
