Why do I get the feeling that would be legal in the Great State of Illinois?

Your thinking of a stiletto, and no there against the law in most states.

A stiletto is a style of blade and has nothing to do with whether it opens from front or side or even if it opens at all.

sti·let·to   Audio pronunciation of "stiletto" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (st-lt)
n. pl. sti·let·tos or sti·let·toes

  1.
        1. A small dagger with a slender, tapering blade.
        2. Something shaped like such a dagger.
  2. A small, sharp-pointed instrument used for making eyelet holes in needlework.

I would say most front opening autos are stilleto type blades. You're splitting hairs.

No, they are considered OTF knives.

I like OTF knives.  That stands for out the front.  I have a Microtech that has both sides sharpened and I got it with the grip tape but without the serrated blade.  It was $525 MSRP.  It is the Makora model.

MICROTECH!!
I have 3 and love them. The Makora is an OTF and very sweet.
As far as Illinois, I order them and they ship them to me. Some places won't ship if you can't prove you're a cop, but perserverance eventually wins out.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that originally Stiletto was the name of the company that made the old fifties style switch blades. I used to have a link to them on the web. They're in Italy, and they still make custom auto knives.

I've run into a few over the years that the blade was actually stamped stiletto italy.

Could be wrong, but that's what I've always thought. That it's not a style of knife at all, but a company.

Stiletto is a genetic term for a long thin bladed knife it can be fixed or folding. They started out as a dagger that could get between the links on chain mail.
