I don't ask guests to take their shoes off but I keep slippers available for those who choose to do so.

I ask people to take their shoes off when they come to the house. I'm Chinese though and that's the way my entire family is. Nobody around here has ever given me any grief about it.

Its understood at some peoples houses, the shoes come off when you enter and at others you can keep em on. I usually just look to see what the host is wearing. If their shoes are off then i usually take mine off too out of respect for their house. Alot of people who get their carpets replaced usually dont like people to wear shoes inside afterwards.

At my house, I don't really care if someone leaves their shoes on. That said, more than a couple people and I'll usually ask them to remove them, just so I don't have to worry about the new floors. I want to have a party at my place, but I'm afraid of what will happen to it.

I fuckin hate it . One of my friends got re-married
a couple of years ago and his new wife is a shoes off nazi . I stopped going over to their house , and I told him why . It's not even like she is a neat freak , or they have great floors or light colored carpets . I live in a house , not a Museum . When I invite company to my home . I consider it my job as a host to make them feel as comfortable as possible . If that means I have to do extra cleaning when they leave . Then so be it . It's called Hospitality.... Look it up  |

My house was built to be lived in. Things get used and worn. Eventually they wear out and need repaired or replaced. That's all part of owning a home. Asking guests to remove shoes, having rooms/furniture that aren't used or putting plastic covers on furniture is assinine in my opinion.

We responded to a call for a kitchen fire one time. Upon arrival we were met at the door by a Japanese woman who asked that we remove our boots before we entered her condo
 .We pretty much were like WTF and barged in anyways. There was no immediate threat... the fire was already out (just a lot of smoke and flame from a grease fire that had caused quite a bit of damage to her kitchen), yet her first concern was that we were wearing our boots in her dwelling. |

Shoes off here, and in most of Asia, but under protest by me. I prefer to be comfortable, and not subject my friends to horrendous foot odor.
Actually, since I now wear Teva sandals almost exclusively, it's not such a big deal for me either way, but when I got here wearing combat boots as they were the only thing I had, P-U!!!! My roomate is a retired Navy Senior Chief who lived 7 years in Japan, so that's why I now have the sandals... AYE, AYE, SENIOR CHIEF!!!!Edited to add that I washed my feet every day, and changed socks twice a day. Fuckin-a. Nothing like wire splinters in the feet to remind one of why OSHA likes shoes to stay on. In more social situations I might not mind if I didn't wear boots that require some unlacing and general dicking with to get off. |

The first wife made everyone take shoes off. She used to spend an hour a day cleaning the house; admitted she was analabout it.We aren't anywhere near that anal here now. Taking shoes off makes sense because you track in a LOT of stuff you don't realize ,and it can add up pretty quick this time of year when its all sloppy outside.

I think it's creepy, a bunch of guests all walking around in their socks. Feels ghey to me, somehow.
Shoes are ok in my house, unless they're dirty.....and I don't go to people's houses often that insist on some sort of disrobing before I can go in. |

I don't have a problem with Japanese footwear rules. Others can do that if they want to. But in my house, shoes are cool as long as they've been wiped or checked.
When I worked for the phone company, I got the occasional homeowner who insisted on no shoes. Per company policy, shoes are mandatory safety items and no task shall be undertaken without the wearing of all mandatory safety items. If the customer wanted their phone service repaired/installed, I wore my shoes. (Light work boots, actually.) CJ |
