I am looking for a safe primarily to prevent theft. I am not as concerned about fire cause the guns are insured for fire. What brand of safe, type of locking mechanism do i want (digital, standard tumbler, both?). what are some good suppliers? what about shipping costs and getting the thing in the house. it will be installed on the ground floor so i think a good truck or dolly and some friends helping should be sufficient.

Thoughts, experiences?

Liberty Franklin series or better... It will be over $1,000 at a minimum. Delivery varies with dealer.

Get a standard tumbler, really, how often will you open it.

The golden rule? It's just an extremely expensive cabinet if you don't lock it. It's tempting to leave it unlocked when you are cleaning things, or assembling documents or other non gun things to put into it. However, if you do this frequently, you WILL eventually forget to lock it. The next time you go to unlock it, you'll feel like a shmuck when you grab the dial and it's already stopped at it's last number. DOAH!!! A couple of years ago, I left mine unlocked on a two week vacation.

I'd love to get one of the better liberty's but man they are expensive and then tack on $300 bucks shipping.

I'm thinking about this Winchester safe at Sam's club. UL listed, 1200 deg for 30 mins, $813 delivered.

I have a Stack On, digital lock, cost me about 800 bucks. I like it, i open it a lot, so i like the digital lock, you'd be hard pressed to get anything out of it with anything less than a Cutting torch. plus its bolted to the concrete.

If you have a Cabela's near you, they sell a Cannon American Eagle for about $600. Its 30 in. wide and weighs 525lbs. Its firelined and comes with digital lock. UL listed, can't beat it. I had a smaller Liberty for years with a S&G dial lock. I'd occasionally screw up when I was in a hurry and have to re-do the combo. And, if you lock it up and realize you forgot to get a mag, etc. SHIT!!!!
With the electric you are in as fast as you can push 6 digits. They are supposed to be more secure than a tumbler according to a locksmith I talked to. No need to pay $1200 for a safe.

i got the sam's winchester $600 safe. heck of a deal if you ask me.

moving it was easy. tip it into and out of a pickup bed on its balance point. hand truck worked good.

forget about getting as many rifles into the safe as they say you can. try more like 2/3 the number

Best deal I was able to find was at Sams club. Its $583 I think for the safe. I have been meaning to get one but no one to help me move it. I dont think I can move it in the car by myself easily, if it was marked down to $200 or so Id figure something out I expect.

I have a Zanotti Armor Safe. It is deliverd in parts and you put it togeter. I carred it down into the basement without problemsand it went together perfectly. The safe weighs 900 pound assembed. Price wise I think it was about $2400

I have a Chinese StackOn I got for $500 at Dick's Sporting goods. It's Chinese,it's heavy,fireproof and it will deter a thief.

Did I mention it's made in China ? Of course I didn't realize it was made in China until I got it home.

i have a liberty franklin 35, great safe,
however,
when a safe says it will hold x amount of guns, they mean single barrel break open shotguns
not guns with op rods, bolts or scopes,,,,

anyone else have that problem??
