Quoted: Definately not an otter. This is much less graceful and it has a bushy tail. We have a lot of otters here, I'm very familiar with how they (and muskrats and beavers) look and swim. I've seen minks go in and out of the water here before, but I've never seen one "play" like this one. And I've never seen a marten or fisher in the water at all - although I've seen precious few of them anywhere.
It's gone now, but I'm guessing that it was an exceptionally big mink.

10-4. Saw lots of fisher and marten in Maine a few years back, while moose hunting. It was opening day of trapping season. Two cool OLD guys had been around the past few days, setting Conibears at prebaited cubbies. When the season opened, they cleaned up.They stopped in to check on us that eveing, and had quite a few of each.
Have never seen a mink that wasn't dead on the road ,or in a trap.Lots around, just secretive as hell.
ETA: I still hear the old men's voices whenever I see the word MARTEN.They said,"MAHHTIN".
And had the nerve to say I talked funny!
