[ARCHIVED THREAD] - I think there's a mink swimming around in front of my house

It almost looks too big, though. It might be a pine marten or even a fisher. (Do they like water?) It's been out there for about twenty minutes, paddling around in circles, diving, and pulling it's head and fore-quarters up on chunks of floating ice.

Might be a CHUPACABRA, be careful and load more mags.

Do you have a beltfed? If you don't now you have reason to get one....

Muskrat? They get pretty big sometimes. You better pray it isn't a Nutria Rat!

Make sure you have a long gun AND pistol, incase you put a full mag into it and
it's still kicking. Transition drill and finish it off.

Consider explosives if you have them.

I used to almost always just see them in really inclement weather, whenever it was a heavy snow or rain storm. A Fisher is pretty big and roly-poley compared to a mink, I thought. Might be an otter. We had one follow a stream to our pond, eat some fish, then continue following the stream to the next pond.

A lot of Fisher Cats running around here lately ... saw one a week or so ago in broad daylight crossing the road in front of me.

Definately not an otter. This is much less graceful and it has a bushy tail. We have a lot of otters here, I'm very familiar with how they (and muskrats and beavers) look and swim. I've seen minks go in and out of the water here before, but I've never seen one "play" like this one. And I've never seen a marten or fisher in the water at all - although I've seen precious few of them anywhere.

It's gone now, but I'm guessing that it was an exceptionally big mink.

10-4. Saw lots of fisher and marten in Maine a few years back,while moose hunting.It was opening day of trapping season.Two cool OLD guys had been around the past few days,setting Conibears at prebaited cubbies.When the season opened,they cleaned up.They stopped in to check on us that eveing,and had quite a few of each.
Have never seen a mink that wasn't dead on the road ,or in a trap.Lots around,just secretive as hell.

ETA: I still hear the old men's voices whenever I see the word MARTEN.They said,"MAHHTIN".
And had the nerve to say I talked funny!

A mink is a lot larger than a weasel. Mink get about 18" long and they are very playful.
When we were on vacation at the lake this year, my 5yo son chased one around the marina for about 10 minutes. That thing would let him get within about 10 feet and then take off, sometimes into the water and sometimes just flat out down on a dock. It was playing hide-n-seek with the boy.

Hey, if I could have convinced him that it was cancelled, it would have saved me thousands over the next few years.

He asked Santa at a store if it was cancelled, then spent the next couple weeks greeting every stranger he met with: "Merry Christmas, it's not cancelled!"

What's the deal with Nutria? About the only time i've seen a nutria is on television with that late show guy. He was shooting them with a suppressed 10/22.....
