Anybody still using older stereo equipment?
(Curious, bored, thinking about upgrading, and stuck at home preparing for tomorrow)

I have a Pioneer SA-508. Here’s a pic:

I bought this around 1979 while I was stationed in Germany.

This thing has gone overseas 5 times, Korea to Germany, stored for a year, left with a friend for 6 months - 18 years of mil travel - it'd take a few minutes to write it all down.

This thing has NEVER given me a single problem - unless you consider taking the cover off and cleaning inside a problem. Probably stone age equipment compared to what some of you folks have - but it satisfies my needs, and it just keeps on working. This thing has been left on for days at a time and gets used almost everyday - I’ll turn the amp on WAY before I think about turning on the idiot box.

I’m also still using the receiver I bought at the same time: Pioneer TX-608.

Still have the original Sansui speakers, but one has a hole in it thanks to the ex’s kid - I’m now using a pair of Polk Audio Series 2 Monitors that I bought about 2 years before the Kid From Hell toasted my speaker.

I bought a Teac tape deck at the same time. Man, that thing was huge! Had it rebuilt on one trip back in the US - it has since died, and is no longer with me.

Those older stereo amps are still very good, if you want stereo. So many people these days need their amp to pull double duty as both a music amp and home theater receiver, that you just see them around much anymore.

Just searched the SX-1080.

Those look really nice.

I like the wood look - I just might consider buying something like that as an upgrade rather than something new.

Gotta research the possibilities...

I am still using my Onkyo A25 integrated amp and T15 Tuner. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I re-edged the surrounds in my old Speakerlab towers, but am in process of building some Pi designed speakers (www.pispeakers.com).

Nakamichi Stack! Dragon cassette decks, CD OMS7, ST turner, Statis 200x200 Amp and a set of Infinty Series 7 reference speakers.

Yep, old technolgy but what a sound!

My CD player doesn't like the CD burns sometimes. I wish somebody repaired this stuff.

I would love an old Mac tube amp, I still have some adcom mono blocks around somewhere.I even still have a pair of JBL L300 summits in storage.

I've still got an old MCS series reciever/amp that I got back in 80/81 and it works great. Pretty soon it will be an antique...

My amp, speakers and turntable are still part of the original system I bought back in 1981. The rest of its gone through several generations worth of components. I simply don't make stereo stuff the priority I did 25 years ago in college.

In 1996 I bought a pair of bose 901s and a harman kardon receiver. They're about 20 years old now and I still use the every day. the boses suck when you're shopping for new speakers and are paying 1500 for the pair, but they're hard to beat at 300 for the speakers plus amp.

Think I understand the 'switching' part. But what do you mean with the 'upconversion?' (info for my future upgrade)

Upconversion - I can input s-video, component video, co-ax, whatever, and it all gets up converted to component video - and that is fed to the tv

So now the receiver switches everything, and the tv is just left on component video input

Krell KSA 150 and Audio Research SP-11 Preamp from 1990. Adding Krell CD player and Wilson Audio Sophias next week. That should keep me happy for another 15 or 20 years!

I've got a Sansui QRX 3500 receiver from 1975 that I still use and a bunch of early 1980's Yamaha and Nakamichi stuff.

My TV/living room stereo is modern, because of the need for digital, but in my computer room I still have an Onkyo RI-44 Preamp/Tuner, a Carver Cube Amp and a Lab direct drive turntable. Speakers are home-made Polk towers, I used drivers from a buddy's damaged Polks and remade the boxes. It sounds pretty good, for dinosaur equipment.

My dad is still using his he bought at Mainz-Kastel in 1987, I guess its a small world. He was stationed a Wiesbaden Air Base then. I was in High School working as a bagger at the Commisary in Hainerberg then.

1/2 my equipment is from 1986/87 and is Yahmama. It was premium stuff back then. I have a Yamaha turntable, graphics equalizer, cassette deck, and 5 CD carausel. Used to have a 100 watt integrated receiver which has been replaced in 1990 or 1991 with an Adcom 200 watt integrated amp and separate tuner! Haven't made a cassette tape for over 5 years, maybe more

You might be able to repair the speakers yourself. For $20-30 I re-did the foam edges on some Acoustic Research 10 pi speakers and still use them in the front room.

I'll keep that in mind. The Kid From Hell also got mad and kicked the grill and broke it. The speakers have been in storage for quite a while - the cases are looking a little rough. But...I'm moving in a few months, so may repair the speaker and use them for garage/work shop speakers.

Nope, but I am running David Hafler DH-110 pre-amp, DH-120 amp, Sumo Charlie tuner and Polk Audio 5jrs. Got rid of the SAE C101 cassete deck and Audio Source C-101 Eq w/ Spectrum Anylizer and added a DVD player.

True, but if you connect the amp to an iPod (has a built-in volume control) and a couple of speakers, you've got a nice stereo.
