I've sorta been wanting to get a Victorinox, Wenger, or other swiss army style knife.
I found out the German .mil uses them and was wondering if its a good choice or are thier better, similar knives?

There are some for auction on ebay occasionally too. One on there right now at 30 bucks with no bids, the funds go to some cat rescue shelter. Make sure to post us an after-action report when you get it! |

Heres a good question for you guys.
That knife in black is called Swiss Army One-Hand Trekker Lockblade Pocket Knife.  So they take the same damn knife. take out the Phillips screwdriver, replace it with a corkscrew. Now its the Swiss Army One-Hand Fireman Lockblade.  Now WTF makes a corkscrew more usefull to a fireman than a phillips screwdriver? |

Bought a Trekker and bought one for my son and brother 3 days later.
Sold 2 or 3 "tactical folders" that were limited to one use... Gotta have the phillips though. The Jumpmaster is nice as well BUT it is not a one hand opener.  Great knives, Pete |

How well do they keep an edge? How easy are they to sharpen?
My past experience with Swiss Army Knives is less than stellar when it came to maintaining the edge. Bob |

Round diamond sharpener like the one used for a spyderco is perfect of the serrated blad on the Trekker. Pete |

The Trekker has a saw blade, the Fireman has two smooth blades it appears. Maybe the firemen in France that use them need to open wine a lot

The fireman has the trekker main blade which has the front 2/3 serrated. The second blade is the webing cutter. Coiled surrender flag replaces the tweezer..  Pete |

I have to jump in and pass this along to any prospective Swiss Army Knife Buyers!!!
Do not buy the Wenger brand--they are absolute shit. VICTORINOX is the brand you want!!! I used to sell knives at Cutlery World way back when, and we got tons of returns of the Wenger brand. The handles would fall off or the lock back feature would break. The spring action was crap too. Dead knives. VICTORINOX IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO!!!!! |

Have you ever known many firemen? It better have a traditional bottle opener, one of those screw top helper openers and a small blade to cut the wax seal off fancy bourbon bottles too. They were gonna call it the Alcoholics model, but Fireman sounds better and conveys the same message...

The corkscrew attachment on my S.A. knife has likely got me laid FAR more than any phillips-head screw-driver blade. Think about it.
The phillips blade is weak, anyways. I use a quick-deploy folder and a multi-tool. Swiss Army knives are passe, unless you wear a suit. In direct answer to your question, S.A. knives are almost always good, but seldom great. |

been using an older version of this for about 7 years (almost everyday) and love it.
it's built like a tank, i often use it as a hammer when in a pinch. i have never sharpened it and it is still sharper than most of my other new knives.

I have this SwissTool for about five years. All tools open individually from the outside without clumping and lock securely into place. It's a great multi-tool.
