Looks like the pilot slammed it down on the deck with the tail boom and either broke the tail shaft rotor or else tossed a couple of tail blades. That guy who got tossed from the cabin lookes like he got whacked by the main rotor blades when it went over.

I took a good look at the tail rotor once the chopper started spinning. Looked like all the blades were still there, so a 'contact' with the ground is unlikely. More probably the impact on the ground threw something out of whack, maybe a gear disconnected and the tail rotor lost power/bite.

Better inside than outside when they are doing that, those rotors will flat take you out! The loss of directional control indicates a tail rotor problem.

The main blades & tail rotor cut a huge random swath, in the 3-4 seconds of it chopping up the ground. Looks like odds on living through that one would be strapped inside. The guy that fell/ran looked like he got nicked by the main rotor.

I used "nicked" in the form of "killed", rather than "minor flesh wound"  Plus, I don't like to say "Wow, that guy got chopped in half!" Trying to keep the statement just a bit away from the ogrish side, while we know what we saw...

The dismount may have made it out ok.
Watch the right side of the screen at around 23-28 seconds. Something moves from left to right out of the field of view. Hard to tell what it was due to the dust cloud, but it seems like it was after most of the debris had come down. Looks to me like it could have been a guy hunched over and hauling ass away from the crash. |

I've been on a minor helo crash compared to that; flying NOE at night in a UH-1 and the pilot was so low when he bank the main rotor bit into some ground! He slammed the chopper down hard and bent the skids! We fell out the doors onto ground, LOL. Crew chiefs checked the rotors out and we were actually able to charlie-mike and head back to the air field. I'm sure the pilot fared worse in the end then the Huey did!

Tricycle gear and tail rotors can be a tricky combo. If you watch the aircraft on approace you can see the pilot add in some extra flare immediately before touchdown which probably caused a tail rotor strike. Footnot - a US bird would have spun to the right if it did something similar because our main rotor spin counter-clockwise. Unless it was a Frog or Chinook, but with a tandem rotor it is almost impossible to get a strike on landing like that.
