I saw a photo of the FAMAS sales rep at a 1980s trade show. He looked bored as hell and there was a conspicuous lack of people around his booth. The gun sold for $900+ at a time when AR15s were going for $400 and Chinese .223 AKs were $250, so it wasn't exactly a smashing success on the American market.

I think the cost of labor in France makes it all but impossible to for native companies to compete on the open market. Their labor laws are legendary. I examined a set of French-made enamled cast iron cookware two weeks ago. The enamel was shoddily applied and the cheapest piece in the set was $120. But the FAMAS wasn't just overpriced, it was a bullpup. The bias against bullpups was a lot stronger in the 1980s. They were dismissed as a tacky novelty.

I don't believe any were imported prior to '86, so there aren't any transferrable (or presample) ones in the USA.

The newer military models have that, the Century Arms imported civilian models took the proprietary mag. I bet his reserve is 8k btw...

I saw like 5 semi-autos sitting on the counter of the B&B Guns in North Hollywood CA(near where they had a machine gun shoot-out with LAPD) years ago, and the price tag was something like $1,200, which was too rich for me back then.  But I've never fired one either. Pretty rare guns, as only a few was ever imported into the USA.

The FAMAS was never intended to be a big seller here in the US. No European black rifles could ever compete price wise with the AR. The AUG and HKs were comparitively expensive as well...

From the ad:

This rifle is in very good condition and comes with 6 15-round magazine, one very rare 1-shot magazine, cleaning kit, various accessories, and a heavy duty canvas case made specially for the FAMAS rifles

Please explain to me why anyone would ever want a 1 SHOT magazine ??!??!??!??!!

I'm a fucking idiot that passed on one of these for much cheaper (not '89 prices, but mid '90s prices). Oh well, I guess I have my FAMAS porn to keep me company...

I would rather move to Switzerland and buy a unneutered Sig 550 or FAMAS for 1/5th or less the price you pay for a semi auto only version here in the states.
