Am seriously considering buying a 22. mag rifle in the next couple weeks.

Did have a marlin''Garden Gun'' 22.mag but now I think I'm ready to graduate to a auto.

What are some good'uns!!!

the ruger 10/22 mag is a nice piece. though I'd download the CDNN catalog and look at their EAA 22 mag biathlon rifles with the toggle action, you flip the lever back and forth to cycle it, very quick and very very accurate.

I have the rem 597 in .22 mag. Its a decent gun, shoots very accurate, well balanced, etc. If I had it to over again, I would have gotten the ruger though for the only reason that there are a lot more aftermarket upgrades and I like to upgrade stuff. In stock form I think the 597 22mag is > than the 10/22 22mag, but a tricked out 10/22 mag would woop all.

My dad has an H&K .22 mag auto. I have no idea what model it is but he uses it to shoot turkeys.

He loves the rifle, but I doubt that it is in the price range of a Marlin or Ruger.

Edit: The model appears to be the HK300 that is no longer manufactured. I has a cousin in the safe that is chambered in 5.56 and is great for killing hogs.

I've shot an HK300 22WMR before several times. This is a superior weapon. I was shooting crows and buzzards at 100-150 yards. VERY accurate weapon with a short, crist trigger.

If I cuold afford the $800-$1000, I'd buy one in a snap.

I have a first year of production 10/22 Magnum, and it is a nice rifle. The only problems I have with it are that it used to fail to extract fired cartridges, but that was fixed by a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor (and Ruger has supposedly added another extractor to the bolt to do the same thing). It will also start to fail to feed after about 70 rounds, but if you clean the chamber, it goes right back to work. The trigger pull was typical Ruger, but this is fixed easily with a new target hammer. I have shot several groups around 1/2" at 50 yards, and it will regularly do 1.5" at 100 yards.

There are alot of aftermarket barrels and parts for this rifle, so upgrading is not a problem.

Isn't .22mag prohibitively expensive compared to .22LR for not too much gain? I could be wrong here.

Not if you consider rimfire ammo priced similarly to .223 Remington to be expensive.
Lots of folks love them. I've shot them plenty,but just don't get the attraction.

BTW, the 10/22 Mag would be my choice. It will offer the most options for customization in the future,and may be easier to convert to 17 HMR.
