It's true.

I can't wait to replace my AR with a better rifle.  A cleaner running gas piston design, with AR ergonomics, but also better bolt/extractor/ejection system.

The new FN SCAR is looking promising, and I won't count out the Robarms XCR until some one actually tests one.

Is there anyone else out there who can't wait to upgrade?

I only have one rifle, my AR, that's all I really want, so there is no "get both" for me.

Yes, I will sell my AR.

No, I am not trolling.  I understand that this is "AR15.com", but there aren't many weapons forums with this many gun loving people to share ideas.

so who's with me?

have a good one.

Until someone designs a rifle that is built right here in the USA, has TONS of aftermarket options, uses standardized parts which can be bought from a large variety of dealers and manufacturers, I will stick with my AR's.

Go buy a Mini-14!

Seriously the Keltech SU-16 reviews says its reliable and approaches 1.5 moa out of box.  Takes AR mags.  Maybe thats what you want.  Its cheaper to!  To bad they only offer it in those gay stock options.

for a 5.56 gun, i'd really be very interested in a bullpup, because it allows a long enough barrel to reach the bullet velocity required for fragmentation, but a very short overall length due to the compact bullpup design which makes it ideal for CQB.

the FN FS2000 seems like an ideal solution, the only problem is that it looks even more eevvviiiiillll than an AR, and may become a target of the gun grabbers.

+1.  I think very highly of my Armalite and have had zero malfunctions, but this weapons platform is 40+ years old.  Yes it still works and yes its everything I could ask out of it, but I would also like to buy something new.  No, I won't be selling it, I just eagerly anticipate something that isn't a rehashed Kalashnikov, FAL, Garand, or AR.....is that so wrong!?!?

By a gas piston upper for your AR.  POF makes them.  Hell the damned strike is out maybe.  Thats a piston isn't it!?

how is the AR not a piece of fine engineering?  granted it was state of the art circa 1965, but it is still one of the best actions ever devised.

Actually.  None.  It is reliable.  I can shoot wolf ammo with it, without many problems.  I occasionally have to hammer a stuck wolf case out of the chamber.  But this is the exception rather than the rule.

I have shot  25,000+ rounds (99% Wolf Ammo) on this upper/lower/bolt carrier combination.  (I lost count after 15,000).  I have replaced the barrel twice.  It was a 20" barreled gun for about 1 month.... I hated it like that.

I bought a Colt MPC bolt, but the extractor pin broke, & I replaced it with the extractor pin from my old bushmaster bolt, which had at least 15,000 rounds on it.

So.  Basically.  I want to spend a ton of money on a new weapon, so it can be completely reliable with crap ammo.  Yes.

I hate scrubbing the thing, so that's why I would like a gas piston set up.  Also, I have broken an extractor claw so I would like a more robust extraction system.

Don't get me wrong.  I take excellent care of my rifle.  After shooting sessions, I break it all down, and clean it well.  It is reliable and has served me well... because I treat it how it should be treated.

But just because what I have right now works well... doesn't mean that something else might be better.

I have seen the pics of the Lietner-Wise gas piston conversion's bolt after 5,000 rounds... and I was very impressed.

Just do like most people do.  Get several rifles and/or shotguns, you can't go wrong.

In addition to my 2 AR's, I have an M1A, a 1903. Ruger 10/22, a Savage Mark II .22, Mossberg 590, and a couple others.

If there's something you don't like about your AR, change it. You won't find a more modular system. 16" light weight barrel, 24" heavy barrel, uppers with or without a forward assist or carry handle, more sighting options than I can keep track of, all sorts of stocks. Surely there's some combination that will suit your purposes.

Oh I have piles of guns, but honestly I am beginning to think there comes a point where buying more and more is silly. I wish I had spent some of the money I spent on guns and doo dads on ammo and going to classes instead.

I still almost convince myself every week that I need a new "mega blaster 1200" or whatever is popular that week (then the next week it's something else), but if I get out to the range I realize that my Remington 700, M4 and Glocks all exceed my skill level, so what's the point of a US Optics scope, Noveske upper or $ 3000 uber pistol?

This place is bad for "gearitis" It's a lot easier to talk and post pictures about the new barrel, scope etc I got then to try to explain about the close quarters shooting class I took earlier this month, but that class (if my lazy ass goes out and practices) is probably more likely to save my fanny then a fancy scope for my Remington will.

I think a good minimum arsnenal for one person would be 2 pistols of same make, 2 ARs & 1 Battle Rifle in 308.  Just remember for primary SHTF duty guns two is one.  All you really need to cover is concealed carry guns and HD/open carry.  A pair of pistols and a pair of EBRs are all that you need really.  Throw in a 308 for long range/hunting or whatever and 99% of missions are covered.

I wish there were more foreign offerings available.

If I could buy NIB semi auto Steyr Augs, FNCs,  HK-93's, etc... at competitive market prices,  I would own exactly 1 AR, just to have it as a piece of history to screw around with.

As things stand, I've come to the conclusion the AR is the best semi-auto currently on the American market, so with that restriction,  I live with the carbon build up.

I'd have all of the ARs I do now, one AUG, one FNC and one SIG 55x.
It seems that the folks in the foreign militaries that have a choice, gravitate to the M16/M4.

Okay, maybe I'd have a 16 and 20 inch AUG, one in each color maybe, but that's it.

I would be first in line to replace my AR with something better.  But savvy this, it has been around for 40 years so far and nothing "better" has come along.  I am not holding my breath.

There are comparable weapons, there are weapons that are more powerful, and there are AK's which are really in a league of their own.  The AR has no equal and no peers.  It is the be-all/end all of black rifles.  Its modularity, and the enormous amount of support for it have created a situation in which there may never be another rifle that surpasses it in its abilities to be anything it's owner wants it to be.

Perhaps it is its perceived flaws that have opened the floodgates for the plethora of improvements that are available for it, perhaps it is its modular design and readily accepts a variety of parts, or a combination of those and other factors, but there is no denying that the AR platform is the rifle that all others are measured by.

I only became interested in AR's in the past few months, I am an AK man at heart.  Even I have to admit that there are alot of things about the AR that are endearing.

I used to think as you.  You don't knwo the power of the dark side...  Oh wait.

But I once did think as you and bought a M-14SA and though it is a great gun, the modern AR is not bad.  You'll need to clean it more often than a FAL or M-14, etc, but don't need to white glove it every shot.  Just clean it out after every battle or when your gona shelv it for a bit.  Go ask someone who has been in a battle with the gun, which is not I.

Just using the AUG as an example in the consumer market, you wouldn't need another upper, just another barrel, as the AUG lets you swap between barrels quickly.

I'd love that as a standard feature on an AR, rather than owning multiple uppers.

Somewhere on here there's a thread about a change barrel AR.  But I just don't understand what's wrong with the AR platform.  I carried one in the military for 10 years and never had a problem.  There's so much out there that you can put on them or add to them that I can't think of a better platform.

I can swap a barrel in about 20 minutes on a conventional M16/AR15. So what I have to do it in my workshop rather then at the range or in the field. I'm not going to the sandbox anytime soon (as far as I know).
