I would say that any firearms past the basics would make you a collector. The definition of "the basics", however, is somewhat fluid.
Owning guns that aren't owned for a specific "need" would be collecting. |

When I hit the 20 mark, I registered with the state of MD as a collector.
Then when I hit the 30 mark I moved to VA where there is no such think as a "collector" to sign up for. |

I don't know...you tell me...I have over 60 longarms and a dozen pistols
But it did just sort of sneak up on me...I started with one or two, and before you know it, I'm over-run... Mainly WWII and earlier bolts (20 each of Enfields and Kar98k's....) |

While I may have a pretty nice collection (IMO), I'm more of a hobbyist/shooter/tinkerer than a collector. I think if I were a collector I'd be going after old or rare guns, as opposed to blasters.

Same goes for me. I have a particular fondness for the M1 Garand. C&R related story: A buddy of mine was checking out my RC K98 Nazi Mauser and said, "Where can I get one of those Jew stompers cheap?" I tried not to laugh, I swear.

I buy a particular gun because I have a use for it at that time. I don't consider myself a collector, nor do i have the income to collect many guns I can't immediately justify the cost of.

IMO, collector is not just someone with a lot of guns. A collection has a purpose/goal to be a true collection. It can be lofty or rather mundane goal, but a collection has to have an endpoint.
I have a friend that is a serious student/collector of M1 carbines and trench guns. He has 95% or better carbines in more configuration than I knew existed. He will dump a 95% one for a 98% identical model in a heartbeat. A collection of AR's would be having one from every manufacturer or one of every Colt variant. Having two Colts, an Oly and a Bushmaster just means you have a bunch of AR's. I have a bunch of guns, but my collection aspect is aimed more at hunting certain animals under a mutitude of conditions and some would call it a battery as opposed to a collection. |

I have at least 50 firearms of various sorts around the house, but I wouldn't consider myself a collector. More an accumulator. To qualify as a true collector, I think there has to be some method to the accumulation beyond thinking "that's cool, I want one (or several)."

To me a collector is someone who buys firearms just to look at and they almost never shoot them, and they would never think about taking them out into the field cause they might get scratched. I have several guns I dont really need, but they all get used, I baby them a little but if they get a scratch here and there it doesnt bother me. So I guess what im saying is I dont consider myself a collector.

I used to think that way, until I realized that several subsets of my "accumulation" would be considered a nice, small "collection" to many (most?) folks.  I had to answer "B" in the poll above. I never set out to have 200 guns (or even 100, for that matter). I bought a gun for self-defense, then one for hunting, then another for SD (to fill a need/application that the first one didn't), then a target gun, then a carry-gun, then a duplicate of my carry gun (for various reasons oft-discussed here), then a pocket/BUG, and so forth. For a while I traded or sold as I "upgraded" but, eventually, even most of the ones being upgraded were of sufficient quality that I didn't want to get rid of them. Then I got an FFL for a few years and promptly lost my mind... You get the idea.

No I'm not a collector. I buy what I like regardless of its collectable worth. Although someone just put things in perspective for me about a month back. Life is too short to buy cheap guns.

I'm an accumulator. A collection is a "A group of objects or works to be seen, studied, or kept together." My guns have nothing in common except for the fact that they are guns and that they are mine.

Yes, i'm a collector, but it snuck up on me. At first it was just commercial sporting arms that I was interested in, then one day I got a Russian SKS and thats were it all started. I have sent away for my C&R FFL and I will have that someday, so I will only get more involved.

Maybe an M48 might find its way to my door as well.  I hope to add a few more K98's from the Erma factory as well. My ultimate collection goal is to get an Erma 98k from each year and factory code variation. A nice WW2 Luger and M1911A1 that dont cost a fortune would be nice.

I collect USGI 1911s and Colt 1911s, Been doing it for a while now. I also like USGI or Civi alternative weapons. That is usually what I like to look for and collect. I shoot some of them but I do have one's that are in to good of shape to shoot. There is no way in hell I would shoot a 100% USGI 1911 as I have others that shoot just fine that are not worth as much and would not lose value if shot.
I've been getting rid of some of my not as well liked firearms, 1911s included, but there will never be anything remotely collectable about them, ever. I have expanded some to include other Countries weapons that I like but I do not actively look for them either. If I pop across one great, if not, no great loss. Beats putting my money into buying vehicles and such as they are always money pits. Even the collectable ones have to have a good deal of money sunk into them each year, unlike a weapon that requires but a few cents worth of cleaning and lube/protectant care. To each his own, but I enjoy it, like shooting, and the two mix well. |

I just consider myself an obsessive geek.
Certain type's of military firearms is just one of my obsessions. I also own six of the same make and model of cars, along with several others that interest me. Does that make me a "car collector"? And then there's the whole wheel sets, steering wheels, horn buttons and various other automobilia.I think obsessive is an acurate description. |

me too a collector generally has some direction or deals in a certain type, brand ,country, time period etc i just buy shit if it seems neat to me at the time kinda retarded really i have about 3 that i actually shoot or hunt with on a reg basis but if i do not buy guns i find i sqaunder it on other toys anyway |

My firearms goals, once I get out of school and start making some real scratch, is to have one or two collections plus SHTF/every-day-use guns.
By collections I mean specific categories. I'm not going to be like all you A D D collectors! I want a US Weapons Collection which will start life out as simply a US Rifle collection. The basic version would be 1903, Garand, M14 clone, And M16 clones representing the VN era, A2 era and the modern day era of configurations. Later I want to add the extras like Tompson, Grease gun, BAR, Carbine. My SHTF stable will simply be 4 ARs, 2 Battle Rifles, 2 compact pistols, 2 full size pistols, plus trunk guns (one pistol, one rifle, these might be on the cheap side) for all vehicles I own, and maybe 2 precision platforms. Two is one. If at that point I'm not cured  ....I'll start a commie gun collection of Mosins, Nagants, SKS, AK47 AK74, RPD and complete that collection before moving on. See a theme? Finish a category and move on. I don't care about authenticity, all the collection guns will be shooters and will be displayed (securely) in the open some where. |
