Agents' visit chills UMass Dartmouth senior
By AARON NICODEMUS, Standard-Times staff writer

NEW BEDFORD -- A senior at UMass Dartmouth was visited by federal agents two months ago, after he requested a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's tome on Communism called "The Little Red Book."
Two history professors at UMass Dartmouth, Brian Glyn Williams and Robert Pontbriand, said the student told them he requested the book through the UMass Dartmouth library's interlibrary loan program.
The student, who was completing a research paper on Communism for Professor Pontbriand's class on fascism and totalitarianism, filled out a form for the request, leaving his name, address, phone number and Social Security number. He was later visited at his parents' home in New Bedford by two agents of the Department of Homeland Security, the professors said.
The professors said the student was told by the agents that the book is on a "watch list," and that his background, which included significant time abroad, triggered them to investigate the student further.
"I tell my students to go to the direct source, and so he asked for the official Peking version of the book," Professor Pontbriand said. "Apparently, the Department of Homeland Security is monitoring inter-library loans, because that's what triggered the visit, as I understand it."
Although The Standard-Times knows the name of the student, he is not coming forward because he fears repercussions should his name become public. He has not spoken to The Standard-Times.
The professors had been asked to comment on a report that President Bush had authorized the National Security Agency to spy on as many as 500 people at any given time since 2002 in this country.
The eavesdropping was apparently done without warrants.
The Little Red Book, is a collection of quotations and speech excerpts from Chinese leader Mao Tse-Tung.
In the 1950s and '60s, during the Cultural Revolution in China, it was required reading. Although there are abridged versions available, the student asked for a version translated directly from the original book.
The student told Professor Pontbriand and Dr. Williams that the Homeland Security agents told him the book was on a "watch list." They brought the book with them, but did not leave it with the student, the professors said.
Dr. Williams said in his research, he regularly contacts people in Afghanistan, Chechnya and other Muslim hot spots, and suspects that some of his calls are monitored.
"My instinct is that there is a lot more monitoring than we think," he said.
Dr. Williams said he had been planning to offer a course on terrorism next semester, but is reconsidering, because it might put his students at risk.
"I shudder to think of all the students I've had monitoring al-Qaeda Web sites, what the government must think of that," he said. "Mao Tse-Tung is completely harmless."

I call BS. There are a bazillion copies of Mao floating around and it's pointless to try to track who's getting a copy. It's more likely that the student just made it all up. Remember, we're talking about some random college kid here, probably with a "Bush = Hitler" poster in his dorm room, out to impress chicks and gullible profs.

Not to mention that Maoists aren't at the tippy-top of the threat matrix right now.

Mac, don't lend credence to this bullshit by pointing out facts.  I doubt any "visit" ever occurred.

"Mao Tse-Tung is completely harmless."
Yeah, right. I think there are used to be about 50 million Chinese who'd disagree with that statement.

I tend to suspect the story is BS, as well. It would be plausible if the book in question were some upper-level physics text containing obscure information about nukes, or a chemistry book discussing poisons. I think the story may end up with a statement from the kid that includes the words "draw attention to the abuses of the Bush administration."

If the story is true, it's scary from both ends: from the internal surveillance end and from the "your tax dollars at work" end. I think the threat posaed by 23 year-old pseudoMaoist posers is minimal.

We do not know why this guy was looking into this  stuff, for all we know he was wanting to know more about the enemy.  Even if it is not that reason, he has a right to look for the info.  So instead of burning books as a form of censorship, we burn the readers now?

This sounds like BS to me. Now if they were getting nuclear physics books on diagrams to make an atomic bomb it would be more believable. Also in the present state of war with radical jihadist I would expect the  FBI to investigate groups looking into advanced nuclear physics dealing with atomic bombs.

I have heard that all the information needed to construct an atom bomb is out there in the public domain.  All that is needed is the patience and resourcefulness to consult the different sources and compile it.

How are they going to be alerted if someone gets a single book from 30 different libraries over a period of several months?

You can always play the what if game. It goes on forever. Here is another what if-How about taking physics courses overseas in countries that could care less about the security of the US.  It extremely hard to combat. It is impossible to put the genie back into the bottle. Go down to the local university library and start checking out nuclear physics books pertaining to atomic bomb construction if your really interested in checking this out.

Several called BS on the story earlier on, but the tinfoil types didn't let that bother them.

From your link:

NEW BEDFORD -- The UMass Dartmouth student who claimed to have been visited by Homeland Security agents over his request for "The Little Red Book" by Mao Zedong has admitted to making up the entire story.
The 22-year-old student tearfully admitted he made the story up to his history professor, Dr. Brian Glyn Williams, and his parents, after being confronted with the inconsistencies in his account.

No, the left would never make up BS such as this and other stuff that the tinfoil crowd was jerking off over and the tinfoil wearers would never fall for such lies.  Riiiggghhttt!
