Which chipset should I go with, and why?
Personal preference Nvidia 6600gt or if you can find one 6800 apg.
don't like ATI cards.. too many issues with drivers for me. |
What is the difference between the 6600gt, 6600le, and the 6600?? |
The GT is better 6600 is better than any LE. go to www.newegg.com and compare the cards.. you will see. |
newegg is where I am looking. I can see that the GT is considerably more expensive, but other than that, I don't see what the major difference is. On Nvidia's website, it doesn't explain the differences either. |
+1 Not even arguable. The drivers are more stable and far less likely to give you trouble. |
The GT is faster. Faster core clock, faster memory, more pipelines… faster. |
Is the GT worth the extra $100? I am going to be playing BF2. |
IMO defiantly yes… there is a significant difference. The GT is best bang for the buck. |
I bought a 6600GT a few months ago. It was the best bang for the buck going at the time. Probably still is.
How much do you want to spend?
That should narrow down the choices. I have an Geforce 6800GT AGP 256MB. |
Even after you pick your chipset provider, not all cards are created equal. My Sapphire Radeon 9600Pro is FAR superior in image quality to an AOpen GeForce FX5200. The AOpen card has
obvious ringing, ghosting, and chroma delay issues while the Sapphire card is flawless in that respect. Nvidia's drivers are FAR superior, though. I'd rather have a top ranked Nvidia card. CJ |
For the AGP Id always gone with an Radeon..
Future purchase of PCI-X , Im going with a Nvidia. |
And a real ATI card would probably be much better than even that. I've given-up on using the nVidea cards for anything other than toys. The ATI cards are so much more accurate. Out of the box, the ATI 9800 I've used is much more accurate than you can get any nVidia card I've seen even with working with the driver settings and monitor settings for hours to try to get it color-calibrated. The DAC's in the ATI cards are just so much better than you can easily notice how you can more quickly read text with an ATI card. As an example, on a BFG Tech 6800 I looked at, the red signal was nearly twice that of the blue or green. The image at all levels had a red tint. I'd say the nVidia chipset is better, but when it comes to looking at the quality of the output, the ATI stands alone. By ATI, I mean a real ATI card. The quality of the clones aren't nearly as consistent. If you're just going to play games and don't care about accuracy or speed of reading text, then the non-ATI cards will probably be ok. If you need accurancy, then you can't beat the ATI cards.z |

If you are playing BF2, see here: www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2466 This article applies to AGP cards; for PCI-Express cards, see here: www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2496&p=3 |

You guys are high.
The best AGP video card is the ATI x850XTPE. I bought an x850pro and flashed it to an x850xtpe. The x850pro was $220. The x850xtpe is like a $400 card. Can you do that with a nvidia? Nope. I'm scoring 6500 in 3dmark05, (assuming you're using the same processor as me) you won't see those numbers with any agp nvidia card. Just to show you my non-bias, if I was going to buy a PCI-E card it would be the 7800gt. I also don't understand why eveyone always says "ATI drivers suck". I've been using ati and nvidia back and forth over the years and I've never had a driver issue on both. Saying "ati drivers sucks" is equal to saying "amd's suck vs intel's". It's some old wivestale that was brewed up years ago and for some reason it has always followed them in the eyes of the bias nvidia lovers. They BOTH go back and forth making the best cards. |
Apprently you dont use Linux. Nvidia has forgotten more about programming quality drivers than ATI will ever know. |
With BF2 you should cram as much horsepower under the hood as possible. It really does improve gameplay. I am using a 6800 GT from ASUS in my new system. I was using a Radeon 9700 in my old system. The 6800 GT runs BF2 just fine, assuming BF2 will run for you in the first place. It looks great. ATI and Nvidia trade the title of "best" back and forth often. At the time I bought the Radeon, it was one of the best cards on the market. Right now the GeForce cards seem to have a performance edge. Just be sure to buy a GeForce card from a decent manufacturer with good suport. (My ASUS card is great...) ETA link to the card I bought: www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=324538 As far as I can see it is the most card you can buy for the money. |
i play bf2 alot. i started out using a fx 5600 ultra. i decided to buy my first ati card. i got the x850 pro. All ican say is wow. i also run a dual boot of fedora core 4. it works just fine.
I've never had any issues with ATI drivers...but then again, I don't run Linux. I can count on one finger the people I know who run linux lol. My 9800 pro served me well for 2 years, and other than the missing fog in Combat Mission and a few other games, I didn''t have any problems with the card. At the time I bought it, it was pretty close to the top of the heap.
On the other hand, I bought a GeForce 5700 that's been a POS from the get go. When I decided to upgrade my box about a month ago, I looked at what was out there, and settled on the GeForce 6800GS for $209 from New Egg. I've very happy with the card, and in smokes in games. It's the best bang for the buck as far as I'm concerned, *if* you're talking stock, out of the box, no cryogenticilly cooled overclocking lol. BUT...there is no doubt to my eyes that the text quality is better with the 9800 pro. It's not something that's major, but I can notice it...it just looks a little fuzzy compared to the ATI card...and this is on a CRT, not an LCD. You couldn't give me an LCD for gaming on. |
You should go to the overclocking website and see if yours has an unlockible core. You have the possiblity of taking that x850pro and turning it into a monster. It will unlock 12 pixal pipelines to 16 and will run at 540mhz/590mhz core/memory clock instead of 500mhz/500mhz. It's almost twice the card for free. |
It's true. I've always bought an nvidia then ati, nvidia then ati, etc etc. Each time I put my ATI card I'm surprised all over again how the ati is a ALWAYS a sharper card in both 2D AND 3D vs the nvidia cards. The nvidia cards always have a slight blur to them that is only noticed when you put it up against an ATI card. Honestly, I don't know why I continue to buy nvidia. O wait, they usually seem to be cheaper. Like the 6800GS, it really is the best card for the money if your going to keep it stock. Buy the 6800gs, I would right now if I needed another "bang for the buck card" See there I go again, saying I'd buy another nvidia card. |
I just picked up an ATi X850XT for $190! I installed it and updated the drivers, and text is not as sharp as my old geforce 4200ti. I am having issues with BF2 right now, so I am not sure about the 3D performance, but 2D is a bit disappointing. |
Neither. PCI Express. AGP 8x was so 2 years ago |
I dont want to pull my mobo and recreate my RAID array. There are some good cards on AGP 8X, good enough for me for the time being anyway. |
I have better luck with Nvidia drivers.
I have a GeForce 6800 GTO that doesn't seem to have any issues; besides the auxilary power requirement. |
That's true, but what are you trying to do? Get a fast gaming video card? If so, none of the AGP 8x cards are really suited for the latest and greatest games - they can cut it w/ some detail/graphics management. The Radeon 9800 Pro is a good AGP card to get. It's dated but it'll do it as a mid-range level video card. |

One thing to not overlook is your amount of RAM.
I have a p4 3.2, 6600GT (128MB) and 2 gigs on RAM, and it runs great I had 1 gig of RAM, and thought that my Vid Card was bottlenecking me. I would have 'lag' spikes (I thought they were lag) and almost canned my IP. I bought a 2nd gig of Kingston Value Ram, and now it runs very good. I haven't benchmarked it, but it does what I ask it too. That 2nd gig of ram also really helped my loading times. So, I'm partial to the 6600GT, if you have other help around it. |
I got the EVGA Geforce 6800 XT, and it can easily handle BF2. It cost $150.
OK. I got my monitor readjusted to the new card and text is as sharp as ever. Colors appear more rich as well. The X850XT is going to be a good video card. |

+1 User reviews are your friend |

I hear ya, but cost is another issue. To go PCIe I would need to buy a new mobo, which in turn would support newer processors and RAM (so more money there). Not to mention that I just picked up the X850XT for less than $200 and any decent PCIe card will run me $400 or more. There were a couple links earlier in this thread that show that the X850XT AGP benchmarks quite well. And at less than half the cost of the top PCIe cards, it was an easy decision. |
There is no need for PCI-E really, it was just the new thing to do at the time for the industry.
Even the fastest AGP card doesnt even come remotely close to using all the available bandwidth that AGP can handle. |
Man, that is a smoking deal, where did you get it from? |
I like ATi, and have a 9500 Pro right now. I used to run nVidias until ATi got their driver act together a couple years ago and started kicking nVidia's ass.
Another thumbs up for Nvidia.
I would hold out for a 6800 gs... You should be able to find one for around $250 in another week or so. EDIT: Just saw that you had already made up your mind... *shrug* $190 is a pretty good deal for that card. EDIT2: Note that newegg has the 6800GS for $199 www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127200 |
I'll sell you my 6800GT AGP for $280, or trade for a gun of equal value.
Until the GeForce 6 cards came out. Since then, ATI has been getting their asses handed to them peroformance wise pretty much on a daily basis. They can in no way, shape, or form compete with the quality of Nvidias current offerings. |
If you can hold out a bit longer, there about to make one last push for AGP and release a few more cards, so will have more choices and probably lower prices.
That said. I went from and ATi 9600xt to a eVGA GeForce 7800GT PCI-e and WOW-E-WOW!!!!! Been more happy with nVidia than ATi..... |

I put this Radeon X800 GTO in a month ago to replace a 9800 Pro. Works great! Do not try to play BF2 on 512 or 1 gig of memory. It really sucks a others have said. You will get slow load times and some laggy/stuttering play especially when spawning in. I recommend at least 2 Gigs of memory. It will run like silk. |

MicroCenter. $239 with a $50 mail-in rebate. Sticker on the box says $399.99! |
i have given up on geforce cards. fan failures out the wazoo along with engine failures.
the last 3 radeons i bought have been running trouble free for over 2 years now 24x7. |
I built my sons computers for Christmas and they both have the Geforce 6600GT 128mb vid card.
It kicks ass on BF2. They cost me $150 each. FREE |
