I'll scan it for headings, one or two line paragraphs on the way to read the first couple of comments. If they are "thumbs up" or tend to spark debate, I'll go back up and do a more detailed read.
If comments are of the "WTF?" or "  " model it's on to the next thread.

It depends on what is said in the first 2 or 3 paragraphs on the first post. If it is interesting, I will read every word. If it doesn't hold my interest, then I skip down.

You dont need to read the whole first post.
You can just catch bits and pieces as it gets quoted 4 or 5 more times so people can reply and say profound things like COOL! or More bleach in the gene pool! Or something that REALLY needs a requote of the whole damn thing like  or
