Smith and Wesson will supply 5,530 pistols to the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command Special Projects Office for shipment to the Afghanistan National Army. The order is a follow on to Smith and Wesson initial shipment of 4,850 pistols for the Afghanistan National Army earlier this year. The current order, valued at approximately $1.2 million represent the third award to the company by the US Army since April for security forces in Afghanistan and brings the company's total military order in 2005 to more than 22,500 pistols. Model purchased was the SW9VE.

Are these pistols going to be issued to civilian or police forces in Afganistan? Or is this to replace the berettas

And why not, S&W has warehouse full of pistols that they are willing to get rid of at good price.  The USA taxpayers get a good deal, S&W gets rid of their guns that they can't sell,  and the US Army is helping a USA company.  It's a win-win situtation.

Don't Smith & Wesson have that new M&P pistol out now? Who the hell would want a Sigma?

I sorta doubt that the Afghan forces that are going to be getting these are up to speed on the latest and greatest in the pistol world...

How many AR handguards, stocks, or pistol grips have you heard of melting over there?

True those guns are not up to the quality of the guns in our safes, but I bet they are plenty good for the intended purposes.  Even though Iraq is full of guns, I bet most of them are not in very working order.  The S&W guns may have heavy triggers, but I bet they will go bang every time.
