Actually Eddie bastardized existing axes. In the pics he is milling out the pickup cavity on a Strat style body to accomodate a humbucker, painting it the famed red and white stripes, and he used Kramer necks I think.
Now, or recently, he has been using the Wolfgang/MusicMan style axe that he helped design. He also used Marshalls back in the day, now it's the Peavy 5150, which is an awesome rig, ask me how I know.. |

With a Strat-type, I agree. Les Pauls are a bit more involved with carved tops and neck angles. Archtops? Now you're getting into something that demands serious skill.

Well, I guess the actual building isn't all that complicated but building one that sounds and plays well takes experience and skill. And whole lot more knowledge of guitars than your 1st year woodshop student. I know guys in high school who tried and failed. Now putting together a parts kit is easy. If you have to fret the neck it's a bit tougher but with the right tools anyone can do it. Seating a set neck design takes considerable wood working skill and understanding of the dimensional charactericstics of a guitar. Start from scratch? Will take you years upon years to gain the skill to produce a decent intrument barring you steal ideas from elswhere.. |

+1 on the Peavy 5150...i sold mine to a good buddy who needed a rig to go on the road. now all i have is a Peavy BlackWidow Combo MarkIII series (19inch BW sub that will pound your chest in). |

Making an electric guitar is as easy as bolting together premade parts.
1) You need some absolute minimal soldering skills to do the electric work, 2) You need some minimal skill putting in the nut and not filing the grooves too deep. 3) You need to know how to use a tape measure, to put screw in the bridge either 24 3/4", or 25 1/2" from the nut. If someone actually makes the neck and body by hand, installing the frets individually, that's alot of hard work. Most people just use a premade neck. Acoustic guitar making- now that's an art. I've made a travel guitar out of a piece of Home Depot scrap oak and an old Peavey neck, and I've made kit guitars, but acoustics require skill that electrics don't. |
